No. No Teacher Recommendations, no Map-R (for SMCSM). Just 7th grades and Q1 8th grades + Map-M + essays/statements. That's it.

What I didn't understand from last night's meeting is whether or not they know if kids went to the TPMS magnet. Transcripts clearly list that the 7th grade math class was "Mag Algebra I" which is only available at TPMS. It also indicates the math class was different (2x speed + more content). Is that scrubbed to eliminate the "Mag" - I think that would be disingenuous and unfair, only because the class is materially different. The answers were unclear.

I think they will know. It makes sense because a B in that class is very different than a B in regular Algebra.

Magnet kids aren’t getting Bs! Are they?!!!

Absolutely! Especially in Comp Sci!!!

I... you thought that was a genuine question?! I can't even. JFC.

We are a DC family moving to MC in the Spring. Can we still apply?

I think people absolutely believe that magnet students either effortlessly get all As or are pressured into getting all As or else. There are lots of magnets students who struggle and flounder and are confused.

You can’t if you don’t have a MC address before the deadline.

And there's the middle ground of kids who get Bs. There shouldn't be "lots" of kids in these programs who flounder. That suggests failures in both the selection and support processes for these programs. Similarly, most kids don't effortlessly get all As. These programs are supposed to be hard, right?

It was mostly a genuine question! My own magnet kid effortlessly gets As, and in computer science has had 100 percent since sixth grade. He solidly believes that he’s “not one of the smart kids” in magnet, which gave me the impression that everyone has As. On the other hand his perception may not be related to actual grades.

Is this on ParentVue? Looks like you are right for algebra in 2021/22 as well, though it does also list magnet investigations in science and magnet computer science, which would be identifying.

Oh I see that too. Weird though because this year is Mag Geometry.

Last year was magnet algebra too, but it isn’t listed that way once completed, it seems.

It's odd that they redact Math but not Sci or CompSci then: those show up as Mag on the report cards. Anyway assuming they see the whole report card, it will be obvious purely because Mag kids have 8 classes and all other kids have 7.

There are other middle schools where kids take 8 classes. Unless you mean it will be easy to distinguish magnet and non-magnet kids within TPMS (assuming the panel sees the applicant's middle school).

Spanish at TPMS is not easy for some. Not sure what impact that might have on magnet selection though. My Magnet kids lowest grade is an A- in PE.

They do not see the school that the child attends.

Do we know that they see the entire report card, though? Based what they said at the Blair magnet open house last night, I got the impression that they only see the math and science grades.
