Every Columbia undergrad alum I know hated their time there. The lack of focus on undergrads, poor funding, poor sense of community, and cutthroat and competitive vibe make Columbia a second-tier experience compared to HYPSM or even Penn/Dartmouth/Brown.

Columbia should hire Chicago's admissions dean! Chicago has been very good with fee waivers and ED2 and have jumped 6-10 spots over where they used to be while following the rules. Columbia has a bigger endowment and better location, so they should be able to get into Chicago's ranking area with a little attention and work.

NP Good observation about Chicago. Real/perceived safety issues and their awful supplemental essays doesn't seem to hurt them.

I would. They are much a more useful tool than a general ranking.

The undergrad departmental rankings are not nearly as useful as the general rankings. The graduate rankings they do are more useful as a proxy if you are concerned about a particular discipline.

All students and parents should look at the overall school numbers. Students change majors often, so don’t choose a school solely for one program. For example, we have a relative that 100 percent searched and wanted a school with a great pre-veterinarian program as she wanted to be one for 10 years. One semester into college she changed her mind! Look at the whole school.

The schools ranked higher on the endowment list have some upside given their resources.

Us news says it's resources is 17, so I really don't know why.

In all honesty, what really impresses you about Duke and Northwestern? They are both very good schools but Northwestern is basically the second best school for every discipline in the Chicago area. Duke prides itself on being the Harvard of the South and does have great basketball; however, I can't think of even a single truly elite discipline or grad school there. I've considered Duke the Northwestern of the South TBH, which isn't a bad thing (high-end private Power 5 schools). Both of them are great for the 7-15 range but shouldn't be feeling wronged anywhere in that range.

People don't really hate Duke. It is a great school (top 10-15 is elite). Duke and Notre Dame grads seem to always think their schools are underrated though!
