This. Seriously. The defensiveness is weird, unless you're someone who keeps a filthy home.

Yes. I got so much vitriol when I posted that I air out my house daily and it's important to me to have fresh air. It's too hard, it takes too much time, I have too many windows etc. Meanwhile, Americans are sitting on their fat a** watching 90 Day Fiancé or other c* for hours.

European?

Just wondering. People think I"m nuts for opening my windows all the time to air out the house. In the summer, I do it very early. In the winter, anytime. I'm German, that's how I grew up.

Italian — windows open year round. UV HVAC system. Never clutter. Clean everyday. Most people are slobs. The honey boo boo grown ass adult sock puppet is identifiable in many threads. Unrefined.

I own my condo 100% outright, but thanks AND I don't need to live in filth.

I don't need the money - I have a few side hustles in the off season, and taking care of pets is easy pay. Why not? But look, I've had pet sitters before - how hard is it to tidy up? A little messiness is one thing, but some of you should be ashamed. Clean your damn homes. If your homes are so expensive, surely you can afford someone to do it for you?

Oooohhhhhh, a *condo*! Do you mean like the one I owned when I was 26? Aww, cute! That’s a cute look for you.

At least I own what I can take care of, and not beyond my means. Whatever home you have, do you not take pride in it? If you do, my god man keep it clean.

I figured she's either 80 years old or from Baltimore.

Oh honey, I do. But I find it so adorable that you have to scrounge together pet-sitting jobs and then take jabs at people whose houses are bigger and nicer than yours. Keep cleaning your shoebox and dog-sitting! It’s too precious. Look at you with a summer job you complain about…just like a 16yo!

The condescending "honey" poster! 😂

If they are hiring someone to take care of their pet, I’d say they have their priorities straight.

Yep. That cold, crispy morning air in the winter is the BEST.

I think it’s a combination of common sense + common courtesy to have your home in clean condition if you know that someone will be staying in your home.
I would never leave a mess no matter how busy I was.
I would make sure the floors were swept and mopped, that all junk/clutter was cleared out and that all household trash baskets were emptied.
I also would make sure the dishwasher was emptied and that only clean towels were in both the bathroom as well as the kitchen.

There would be no dirty mugs in the sink and the guest room would have a made bed with absolutely clean linens.

This stuff does not take much time to do but it would show your pet sitter that you want her to feel comfortable and at home while she cares for your beloved pet.

I guess they are just comfortable, confident, busy with other matters, and don’t care what you think of their home. My home is an absolute wreck right now, but I would clean like mad before I had anyone over. That’s just how I was raised.

To have a complete stranger into one’s personal space, it is only reasonable to have it clean & attractive so the person will feel comfortable. I would most definitely run the vacuum and dust prior. I also would clean the bathroom, replace dirty towels and have the guest bed made.

^^ And all of this could be completed in less than two hours.

But would make a huge impression!

My house is never as organized as I'd like. There's just so much clutter and I have chronic fatigue and can't keep up with it. I need a Girl Friday or something to sort it.

I've tried multiple times to find help but I never found the right fit. I hired a housekeeper (major fail), I hired a fancy organizing firm. Most recently I hired a lady who did a pretty good job but we got to the end of our budget for it. Now my house isn't dirty because I have cleaners come every other week, but it's never clutter free and I feel shame and angst about it. When I look at videos of the kids when they were babies (back when I wasn't ill) I see how nice my house was all the time and feel so sad.

My husband is just not a neat person and I'm OK with him not helping. He supports this family really well financially and he doesn't complain about my limitations. I don't expect him to do all the housework on top of everything else.

I have one neat kid and one messy kid. I've offered to pay the neat kid to help me straighten up the house this summer. She's really excited about it. So we'll see. Hope remains eternal!

I'm sure our pet sitter thinks we're kind of messy, and I hate that, but I'm doing the best I can with my limitations.

When you see a messy house, let it fill your heart with empathy, OP. Maybe they've got actual issues (my friend did an intervention for another friend with a hoarding problem). Maybe they don't have the time or energy or money to deal with it properly. I'm sure they would prefer a clean and tidy house, but it's out of their reach right now. They still deserve a vacation.

All this mean-girl stuff on this thread is just silly. No one is better than OP for being older or having more money. We can all use a little more kindness and perspective.

I have some sympathy here because I do find it hard to keep up with mopping and dusting. Our house is 130 years old and gets dusty MUCH faster than anywhere else I've ever lived. That's a major reason we don't have any pets - I'd love a cat but can't take more to clean.

That said, the poster picking on OP for...making a teacher salary?...is absolutely awful. Some people don't make a lot of money! We don't, nor can we afford any household help! Making fun of people for not being rich is never, EVER a good look.

So op you now realize that many of these posters also
Live in filth. My mom has cats and she just got a cat sitter for the first time. My mom is a hoarder and never cleans ever. Like counters are covered and there is cat hair piled up in the corners. If a car throws up, she will just leave it there. When she told me that she got a sitter, I felt deeply ashamed and bad for the sitter. I’m sure it will be shock.

People with pets are often kind of gross. They tolerate pet hair, poop/pee stains in the carpets, smells, etc. That's fact. But still teacher shouldn't judge.

I have a toddler and a dog. I spend at least 30m a day on average cleaning and another 30 tidying/organizing. I have a wonderful housecleaner every two weeks. My house still returns to chaos and filth within 24 hours, I swear.
