It's not just teachers.
My company hosted a job fair this weekend for not high but decent paying jobs (range of 40-50K, unskilled postitions, in-person work only). We had ONE attendee in 4 hours. Typically we get swamped.

The stimulus checks are gone. Where are all the workers???

Moved out of the crappy, low paying, no benefits/prohibitively expensive benefits jobs into better jobs vacated by all the people who took early retirement, switched to remote only jobs or stayed home to take care of their kids in the past two years.

No one wants $40k for "in person only" anymore, and they certainly don't want to work service jobs for peanuts. It's not an employer's market anymore.

Even my kid's camp counselor at fishing camp seems like a hard gig (ride in an 11-person bus for 45 min to a lake and teach 8 little kids how to fish...yikes!). I DO NOT understand how there is a staffing shortage for a NICE and WELL PAID summer gig like CTY - a well established program with free lodging, a dedicated administration, a college student teaching aide, and a carefully curated group of students that is super excited to learn and hear you talk all day about your niche academic topic.

You don't understand what talent pool that's a high percentage of teachers or educators doesn't want to work *this* summer? You're not very bright.

Focusing on their mental health, apparently. We are witnessing the downfall of our culture. We’ve told the last couple of generations that they are supposed to be happy and fulfilled and passionate about their jobs. That’s a false statement. Work is hard. Contributing to society is valuable. You don’t deserve a good life. No one does. You’re fulfilled when you work and provide value.

Sounds like a combination of Covid issues and staffing issues. Interesting.
