Wow that’s crazy that they thought they would be able to fill 20% of their staff spots within a week ?!?! Unconscionable to wait until the last minute after people were already traveling

Was it only at Haverford that it was this bad?

Is it because they couldn't find staff?

That’s what they say. Though we paid back in JANUARY so unclear what they were waiting for?

I guess it's just hard to fill positions these days. I think I saw a CTY job ad a few weeks ago. It surprised me because I worked at CTY years ago and I don't remember them advertising. It seemed hard to get hired then, not that the job paid much. A lot of staff returned year after year, but even though we all needed the $, it wasn't the primary driver (almost any other job would have paid more). Maybe the model falls apart when you don't have programs for two summers.

Are these camps typically staffed by teachers? If so, teachers have had enough.

CTY says they’ll try to open for the second session of Haverford in an email to me. Good luck all, yuck.

Just got back from drop-off at Franklin & Marshall. I don’t think most people there knew what was happening behind the scenes (thanks DCUM!) and nothing was really different from previous years we’ve gone. The site director made a speech but mentioned NOTHING of the nationwide cancellations. So weird. My child’s dorm has a “temporary RA” for the first couple days. The line for Covid testing was longish. But otherwise, all was well. Our family feels extremely lucky that our DC chose a course that wasn’t canceled at a site that wasn’t hit too hard. But our hearts to go out to those kiddos who’ve been looking forward to this since they signed up in January. This will be my child’s last year so I hope they have a great time.

Yeah it coasted on enthusiastic teachers working as camp counselors, and they have no interest in being in the classroom over them summer after the slog of school these days. They didn’t need to pay much since it was an easy gig without standardized testing and with smart engaged disciplined students.

When this hits the news it will eviscerate it’s reputation. Duke Tip died earlier, more mercy there.

It's not just teachers.
My company hosted a job fair this weekend for not high but decent paying jobs (range of 40-50K, unskilled postitions, in-person work only). We had ONE attendee in 4 hours. Typically we get swamped.
