CTY Haverford — Cancelled one day before???

I suspect these programs are in more trouble staff-wise than traditional summer camps where most of the counselors are from overseas. The counselors are on J1 visas and if they quit, they go home.

It's not just teachers.
My company hosted a job fair this weekend for not high but decent paying jobs (range of 40-50K, unskilled postitions, in-person work only). We had ONE attendee in 4 hours. Typically we get swamped.

The stimulus checks are gone. Where are all the workers???

Yes, that's why Donald Trump loved the short term visas for the hospitality and other summer industries. The workers are stuck. People who can teach at CTY...have options.

Not even requiring a HS diploma ? ("Unskilled")?

My kid has some disabilities and struggled to find a job throughout the pandemic. He wanted to work! But employers were terrible about getting back to him, or were holding out for staff like “they’d had before.”

He finally got a job, but many employers have done it to themselves around here with higher age limits and work requirements. And young workers have lower Covid risk.

Yeah it coasted on enthusiastic teachers working as camp counselors, and they have no interest in being in the classroom over them summer after the slog of school these days. They didn’t need to pay much since it was an easy gig without standardized testing and with smart engaged disciplined students.

When this hits the news it will eviscerate it’s reputation. Duke Tip died earlier, more mercy there.

More than this, they changed management and aspects of their programs. I found them fairly incompetent. They wanted to put my then 10 year old in a HS level class that ended at 9.30pm during the week. They also failed to respond to requests to test-in to a language class and so I booked one elsewhere, losing them over $1K for the gig and the future gigs that would have ensued.

They are fully down the drain.

This is very sad to hear. My kids went several years ago (both the day program for elementary kids and then the boarding program for middle school.) It was a great program, and for the kids that it was designed to serve it was a really great program. With two years of virtual and now this... I'm not optimistic about the future of the program.

cancelling one day before shows an Olympic level of incompetence

We do require a HS diploma and a certificate program specific to the field. The certificate takes a couple of months or even weeks for a motivated person and can be acquired online. Maybe unskilled is the wrong word choice.

Oh no. Such a bummer for everyone affected. My daughter is supposed to attend the International Politics session at Dickenson next month — one of the sessions that was just cancelled. Oh dear. At least we have some time to prepare for the possibility. She’ll be so disappointed if it doesn’t go forward.

Parents had luck transferring to EXPLO at Wellesley and SIG (Summer Institute for the Gifted) at Bryan Mawr at the last minute. I suggest you check them out and have them on speed dial in case the worst happens.

Wait until you see how many teachers will be missing during the regular school year. This problem is not unique to public schools. It’s bad even in local private schools.

Thank you so much! I will look into these!

I wish I had seen this note earlier, we just got notified of cancellation for session 2, and I just put up a post asking for ideas. Thanks for the suggestions!
