| Yeah, I’m getting a refund as well on session 2. Luckily my kid is older and developed some other options for when he’s at home. My sympathies to families who relied on the camp to look after kid. |
| Such a bummer. I worked for CTY when I was in college at JHU. I was a TA, an RA, and an office assistant at the Baltimore and Carlyle locations. It's pretty fun, and it is not like teaching at a public school, so I am surprised that they don't have instructors - it is a good teaching gig! Sorry this happened your kiddos, especially with so little notice. |
| You know, I get why people don't want to be servers, flight attendants, police, retail workers, public school teachers, and bus drivers. Even my kid's camp counselor at fishing camp seems like a hard gig (ride in an 11-person bus for 45 min to a lake and teach 8 little kids how to fish...yikes!). I DO NOT understand how there is a staffing shortage for a NICE and WELL PAID summer gig like CTY - a well established program with free lodging, a dedicated administration, a college student teaching aide, and a carefully curated group of students that is super excited to learn and hear you talk all day about your niche academic topic. |
If you don’t understand why a thing that is happening is happening I guess you should just sit quietly and keep thinking. |
It’s a fun gig IMO (worked at CTY in college) but not remotely well paid. |
Also, people with partners and/or kids don’t necessarily want to go live in a shared house in Carlisle PA with strangers for 6 weeks. It’s a limited pool. |
Or pets |
Why do you think it's such a cushy job? It's still a ton of work. And if you can make more money doing something else, or you want your summer to yourself, then its not attractive. |
Ah it’s because everyone got a dog during the pandemic! |
Well paid? For teachers, it works out to between $25-30/hr. I can make that nannying for 1-2 kids. |
Focusing on their mental health, apparently. We are witnessing the downfall of our culture. We’ve told the last couple of generations that they are supposed to be happy and fulfilled and passionate about their jobs. That’s a false statement. Work is hard. Contributing to society is valuable. You don’t deserve a good life. No one does. You’re fulfilled when you work and provide value. |
I posted about it and I worked there too. The teachers were all young phd academic types. They got to teach what they loved to interested kids and build their teaching resumes bc most of them wanted to teach things like physics and international political economy to bright and interested kids, not push around a stroller and wipe up purée. It was a young and intellectual community and for an academic at that level, good pay. |
Hahahahaha. You clearly are a motivational speaker. Hahahahaha. |
That's not nearly enough to get people for completely in person. Next to nobody wants that. |
