Baby formula has been flying off shelves and can’t be stocked. This is just one of the many things the Bidenflation and bidenomics has brought.

Expect more shortages of essentials soon. Fertilizer costs have jumped something like 500% and that’s what farmers need to grow food. This was happening late last year and made the news a couple months ago.

I suspect shortages in any small essential food and household necessities.

Car prices are set to increase as well…they have by 40-50% already so expect to see any decent vehicle with good mileage to be self well above market value.

I'm sure there's a role for the federal government - the NIH runs a rare disease program. Maybe a coalition of parents, doctors, government officials could put together a proposal?

Relax regulations to allow formula to be made with non-tested or contaminated ingredients? Ration formula - 1 can per family per month? I’m being dead serious here. Baby formula is a highly regulated, highly perishable product that is made by only a handful of companies around the world, none of whom had any incentive to stockpile given the perishability of the product and trends toward increased breastfeeding.

That being said, I do think there are some information holes here on acceptable, albeit imperfect substitutes. They’re not going to be convenient nor easy but fed is best, right? Women may not know that they can get their milk flowing again with lactation drugs and constant stimulation. With an incredibly strict diet it’s likely a woman can produce a milk that will be safe for the tenderest of tummies. For families without working boobs, some pointers on things to look out for in unregulated person to person milk donations would be useful. Government scientists should also release some guidance on making VERY SHORT TERM nutritional substitutes for hungry babies - whatever is safe and from common ingredients like corn syrup and boiled water, simple syrups, etc. Morons and cheap asses will do what they do, so there needs to be extreme follow up to get folks back on formula later. Maybe some other guidance on boiling or sterilizing potentially contaminated recall lots. Consider whether EU formulas might be allowed in temporarily, assuming they even have extra to spare.

So, OP posts this and links to the article, which has right in it that the FDA has asked Congress for new authorities so that they can prevent this situation from happening in the future.

In a recent budget document, FDA asked Congress to consider giving the agency new authorities to help prevent this type of situation from happening in the future. The agency noted that “no law requires manufacturers of infant formulas or essential medical foods to notify FDA when they become aware of a circumstance that could lead to a shortage of these products.”

The agency would like to see a requirement that companies notify the agency if there are anticipated interruptions.

DP. How exactly are the feds to ‘partner’ with parents and doctors? You want them to start a breast milk cooperative? And why not contact your state government? Resources and shortages vary by local consumption.

DP here. Formula manufacturing is regulated at the federal level. In addition, there are a handful of factories in the entire country that make formula. I'm all about approaching advocacy from a multi-level government perspective...but this is very much a federal issue. I don't understand, though, why OP posted this. Sounds like FDA is asking for new authorities to prevent this from ever happening again. In the meantime, there's a limit to what can be done unless you are suggesting that formula regulations should be loosened so that babies can instead die from tainted formula.
