I'll bet a lot of people who have them didn't "make it". |
NP. I don't know about the art comparison but the Rolex I bought 20 years ago for $6,000 ago has doubled in value. Doesn't make me want to go buy another, but its definitely not a depreciating asset like cars/boats. |
Maybe, maybe not. It depends on the model. Simply buying any Rolex doesn’t guarantee it will (eventually) go up in value. However, the Rolex GMT I purchased for $4500 ten years ago is no selling used for $15-$20k. Daytona models are currently selling for much, much more than that. |
| Good luck finding one to purchase |
| I don’t think there are many to be found. My husband just bought an Omega Seamaster in NYC. The Rolex store was empty. |
I’m 42 and wear mine every day. |
Try buying it second hand. |
I think Omega is a very good suggestion. Neither Rolex nor Omega fit in our budget, but maybe 15 years ago, we exchanged Tag Hauer watches for an anniversary. |
There are unlimited Rolexes available “second hand” but they run anywhere from 1-1/2 to 3 times retail price. If money is no object you can have any model Rolex tomorrow from numerous grey dealers. It’s just going to cost you obscene money. |
This compulsion to try to rank other people’s choices based on your perception of their intent is sad. My family has had more money than we’ll ever spend for generations. When I see someone driving a Lexus SUV, I assume they like Lexus SUVs. I get that some wealthy people are competitive about it, but that’s always mystified me. Just enjoy your life. |

Op, check out jomashop. They are a legit business. I got Tag and Longines from them (and other luxury gifts - scarves/handbags for the DW). They also buy and sell used which I have no experience with.

| I prefer a Tag Hauer. It can get wet and is very durable. It's a diving watch. |
My DW got me an Omega several years ago. I like it a lot and wear it daily. Rolex has a bit more catchet than Omega. However, I really like the watch I have on an aesthetic level. It is an Aqua Terra. The thing I really like about it is that it’s not exclusively a dress watch or a sport watch, and it looks good pretty much whenever. Also, before the haters weigh in, it keeps good time. I sync it up to the NIST clock every month or so, but it is never wildly off. |
^^PP here. To your question, not sure what the breakdown between Omega and Rolex would be from a fashion standpoint. They are relatively similar in a lot of ways. Omega can maybe be a bit more contemporary, but I don’t know. I think the real difference is that some people attach more significance to owning a Rolex specifically. Some people care less or even specifically don’t want a Rolex. Most of the time, Omega is somewhat cheaper as well, though still fairly expensive. |
Rolex essentially invented watches that can “get wet” - all of the ones discussed here are good for many atmospheres of depth - I’ll let the experts say just how deep. Plus a TAG is quartz - so you’re paying a lot of money for a watch with a movement no more complex than a timex. Rather than a TAG get a Casio G Shock if you want a sturdy value quartz watch. If this OPs husband wants a Rolex I’d recommend getting him home. I’d love the Batman colored GMT (blue and black). So awesome to me! |
