Should I buy my DH a Rolex?

Stupid post by a sad striver who knows nothing about watches.

+1. My DH has watches from IWC, Omega. A. Piguet, and Blancpain. His favorites are the IWC and the Omega. He thinks Rolexes are for flashy strivers who don't know much about luxury watches.

If he wants it and you can afford it then go for it. It would be lost on my DH - it would never occur to him to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a watch? If you think he might be in that category, maybe plan a nice trip instead that you could enjoy and remember together

I don't think anyone 40 or under wears watches anymore. We have them on us all day now - they're called phones. Nothing says "I'm a boomer" more than an expensive watch these days

I agree that many under 40 don’t wear a watch but certainly not all don’t.
A watch remains the one piece of jewelry (other than a wedding ban) that is acceptable for men to wear.
I’ve noticed financial people (bankers and money managers) and attorneys that I deal with wear watches. Seems like Rolex is the preferred brand to me.

The more unnecessary something becomes, the more status it confers. Prices on certain Swiss models have soared in price since smartphones became ubiquitous.

Mine would have never appreciated this. Maybe yours is different.

Never thought of it that way but you bring up an excellent point.

Nothing wrong with those other makes but if he thinks Rolex isn't good, then he doesn't know as much as he thinks he does.

LOL. Some major logic failures here. No one said that a "Rolex isn't good," people said that they are flashy and, in the watch world, associated with strivers. In contrast, PPs actually said that Omegas are for those who can't afford rolexs, which is just wrong.

The post said it was for "flashy strivers" who "don't know much about luxury watches." This is wrong. Some, yes, are flashy, but many are not. (If they are more recognizable, it's just because the designs are now so iconic.) The main point, though, is that they are actually really, really good watches. People who don't know anything about watches think Rolexes are great. People who know a little bit about watches think Rolexes suck. But people who know a whole lot about watches recognize the quality. They're not Patek and they aren't trying to be, but they do what they are intended to do very, very well.

So which Rolex did you get him?

Get a grand Seiko. At least it will tell reasonable time.

I'm sure DH would prefer that you spend the money on bolt ons instead.
