How can you tell if someone is conservative?

Anonymous
I look and dress just like my sisters. They are conservative, I am liberal. The main difference between us is I'm the only one living in a city.

My ILs look, act and keep their home just like most boomers do. They are very Catholic Democrats.

I know some southern/rural people who started off like "Just give Trump a chance" and have ended up Biden voters. They are indistinguishable from their Trumper neighbors from outward appearances (but when you get to know them, there are personality differences).

Unless you're Kamala?! I love my pearls - and I'm a pretty lefty liberal.

+1. I’m a SOUTHERN liberal who wears pearls. I’m not religious though.

I'm a leftie that wears pearls. That said, I can basically guess your politics 100% of the time just on how people present -- clothes, shoes, hair (especially!), make up... I used to work around Heritage and we could spot them a block away.

Why do you care@?

Damn autocorrect VIEWS not Jews

Republicans do tend to display their political Jews publicly too, so you may inadvertently be on to something.

Those stupid stick figure families on cars are a dead giveaway.

From what I have observed having married into a conservative family:

- Preppy aesthetics
- Interest in the American South; Charleston, their food and traditional decor
- Conservative appearance: clean button downs, blue blazers, pearls and Tuckernuck
- Pretty wealthy with contacts/family in finance
- Does not speak about their politics

Reasons include: DH's pickup truck; working in financial industry; being from the South; dressing up; having a child young (26); living in Alexandria; not being overly "PC"/woke; and simply not hating conservatives.

Long time Alexandria resident here. Who assumes people who live in Alexandria are conservative?

This is a good point. Conservative or.....the extremists currently in control of the GOP?

If she’s college-educated and UMC, chances are good she’s left of center. OP, your friend assumed that of you because you never said anything to indicate otherwise. I don’t blame you, but you can’t be surprised.

Love,
Right-wing UMC college-educated mom who knows I have to signal this if I want anyone to know!

Original PP here. This, and even though I personally am not conservative, I am friends/acquaintances with a lot of R-leaning K street types who live here. That being said, I sometimes *feel* conservative compared to people in Del Ray/Rosemont. Lots of over-the-top virtue signaling yard signs

1. Is she a SAHM?
2. Does she belong to a church?
3. Does she do some type of charity work? Through church or other org?
4. Lack of attributes identifying her as being left leaning (pink/blue hair, hybrid vehichle, pronouns on LinkedIn, etc)?

I know women how are yes to all 4 and are very liberal. I guess volunteering for homeless shelters your church helps sponsor is a marker of a conservative

Yep, I’m not saying that the above are positive confirmation, they’re just clues.

Those clues would be wrong for 80% of moms I know, especially the Catholic ones.

Yep, all that describes my mom and she's been consistently liberal her whole life.

Conservatism is kind of a meaningless term these days. I used to regard the term as generally referring to a certain morality and a dedication to a balanced budget.

The Presidential election results in 2016 and 2020 demonstrated that morality and fiscal responsibility weren't what the Republicans were about *at all.*

Didn't Alexandria go for Biden at like 80-90%?

She's happy with her life, smiles a lot, genuinely cares about others and their well-being and seems at peace with herself and others.

+1

Happy people are usually conservatives. There have actually been a lot of studies on this.
