Diet, Nutrition & Weight Loss
Norwegian? Truly some tall and broad-shouldered people there. But, the very beautiful body builds, to me. |

I dunno i am torn. Do think it is a moral issue but something broader going on. Americans have by and large become so much fatter over past twenty years. It is mostly a public health issue. Judging people for their weight rarely has good outcomes.
I have always been on the bigger side despite eating well and doing tons of exercise. Not obese but not skinny. On the one hand, it feels good that i now skew average or below, weight wise. I am also happy that large sizes are now often too large for me. .., But I feel sad as i can’t imagine that folks aren’t experiencing a lot of health issues from the rapid collective weight gains. Also, to be honest in an anonymous kind of way, I still disguise my blubber under loose fitting shirts because really who would want to see that? So many people now seem to be proud of their large bodies - eg the board walks of MD and Delaware beaches appear to be full of obese people covered in tattoos and skimpy clothes. This is probably good in some ways (ability to enjoy life without feeling self conscious) but perhaps we need a little shame to help us stay on healthy paths? Too much one way or the othet not good ... Peace out both fellow big people and you lucky skinny people! |

The bottom line is that obesity is a serious health issue in this country and should be treated and managed as such.
The impact on the health care system is staggering in terms of dollars spent and resources used. If you don't take care of yourself in your younger days, your entire retirement savings could be wiped out with health care costs down the road. I appreciate the stories on this thread about obese folks not being unhealthy per se but obesity has become so accepted in this country - I don't know that people are dealing with it honestly. |
Except they leave out how long they were being unhealthy before deciding to make changes and trying to be healthier. You don't become obese overnight |
But is it? The whole thread is acting like fat people are people who just eat too much, but 1600 calorie diets aren't eating too much, even if it's too much for your body. When you treat someone who works out, eats healthy but moderately, and is overweight as if they're sitting on their beds eating fries and pizza all day, it IS relevant. Isn't the whole point of these fat shaming threads to let these fat people know that they need to eat less and move more? And then when we realize that the fat person you're making fun of walks 5 miles daily just by existing and eats a 1600 calorie diet and IS fat but healthy (per blood work), we all of a sudden decide it's irrelevant because they're eating MORE than THEY need anyway? Are you actually interested in solving this or in pointing out that fat people are fat and it's their fault? |
And you don't lose weight overnight either. You know what you body can do? Gain 40 lbs in a month without you even catching why (that's when I was diagnosed with PCOS). Do you know how long it took me to lose that weight with regular exercise and calorie counting? I commend those of you who have the discipline to do the hard thing over time, but don't sit here acting like for some people gaining weight isn't a super easy thing and losing it a super hard one. Don't act like sugar doesn't mess with your brain and increase cravings, don't act like certain foods are triggers for hunger and unsatiety in some people leading to even harder choices. You've never had to deal with that? Good for you. But not everyone's body is built like yours. |
But they likely ate far too much for several years, leading to accumulating a lot of extra weight. |

So we had a pp who was honest and posted about her struggles and eating calories prescribed by her Dr... and she was torn down within an hour?
And yes, the premise of this thread is insane....rant of a lunatic, no? |
How was she torn down? |
| The fact that farm animals have become obese and managing obesity of farm animals is a major agricultural issue now should maybe give people a hint that there is a lot more going on here than "willpower," but God forbid people actually think a little. |
Do you have a time machine I can borrow? |
You are so totally nice and not into shaming overweight people. |
Facts aren't shaming. Unless you are ashamed of the facts of why/how you became overweight. But if you aren't, there is nothing shaming by pointing out one's diet/lifestlye played a role in why they are where they are with their weight |
You are so off base here it's ridiculous. |
This is non-sensical. If you are eating too much (for YOUR body, not Susie’s body) then you are eating too much. That’s why you’re fat. I don’t care in the least what you choose to eat or how much you choose to weigh. Seriously, I DO NOT CARE. I don’t judge fat people or make fun of them or try to solve their problems (if they even consider their fat a problem - not my place to decide). If you are eating too much for your body and are therefore fat but you are happy with your overall health, lifestyle, and appearance, then good for you! Apparently it’s not a problem. But if you are unhappy with your health, lifestyle, and/or overall appearance due to your weight, then the ONLY way to “solve” your problem is to eat less than YOUR body requires to maintain its current weight. If it’s not worth it to you to eat even less, then fine, you and only you get to determine your priorities, but that doesn’t change the laws of physics. |
