When King Farm was first built, there was talk about how there was land set aside for a school there. I don't know if it was free or not but a school has never been built there.

So blame this on the previous administration or whoever was in charge when the decision was made to take the free land.

But I don't blame MCPS for not predicting the declining enrollment. I don't remember when everything started but if there were ever any drop in numbers, MCPS probably thought it was post pandemic related and thought that the numbers would eventually rebound.

So think by the time the declining enrollment became apparent that it was an actual thing, the ball was already rolling for Crown and too late to stop it.

With all the development that is being talked about, the green area by Rio lake, Lakeforest, the old office park in Derwood, off of Research Blvd, etc will MCPS have to deal with overcrowding and enrollment numbers not matching projections, then have to redo boundaries again a couple of years down the line?

It’s a terrible location, right at the exit of I-270. Morning and evening traffic would inevitably back up onto the highway. It’s also uncomfortably close to a major shopping area, which would only encourage students to skip classes. Despite being near several neighborhoods, the site isn’t truly walkable because it’s boxed in by several highways. This kind of shortsighted planning raises serious questions about whether MCPS leadership is capable of making sound decisions at all.

MCPS knows this but doesn't care. If it did, then it would have never proposed Option H. if there is ever a traffic injury (or g-d forbid, a fatality) involving a Crown student, MCPS will be to blame.

Blair, Paint Branch, and Julius West, to name a few, are also right off highways. Doesn't seem to be a major concern.

Have you been crown? Julius west is as close to Highway exit.

With a holding school, there are large cost savings and the schedule can accelerate. Magruder would be on the new CIP request -- the only reason it is not on the current one is because the prior thought, without a holding school, had the schedule such that Magruder planning funds wouldn't be expended until the year after the current CIP period.

Same goes for all the other high schools on the list -- the only reason we don't see them in the CIP is the 6-year window. Wootton would have been next after Magruder. If they move it to the Crown facility, then maybe Einstein would be next on the radar, instead?

There are plenty of schools in need, and Taylor laid out the reason that we have such decrepitude: capital underfunding over decades vs. the expected useful life of constructed facilities. MCPS needs to be renovating/rebuilding on a much more aggressive schedule to maintain equilibrium and even have a chance of improving environmentals/avoiding more costly operations associated with deteriorating conditions.

I hear you. Damascus HS won't be completed in renovation until expected August 2031 with either on-site or holding school option. With no other funding or plan to renovate other HS, would mcps leave new Crown HS building vacant from 2027 to 2031?

No it’s only 2027 fall to 2029 spring (1 year ) and Damascus will move in crown as a holding school.

Damascus to Crown for a holding school is a horrible idea. Way too far of a commute. Absolutely unacceptable and yet will most likely happen ugh

There are many ways they could reduce the budget. For example, they could close 20% of elementary and middle schools and still have enough seats, but that would cause too much disruption. The same applies in this situation. Budget considerations are not the only factor at play here.

Of course they can. But MCPS should listen carefully to those who are most affected by their decision. Amorphous concerns about budgets are curiously absent when people have something to gain. Here, Wootton families don’t want to move to Crown, but rather the bare minimum maintenance to their existing facility. That is a very small ask compared to the enormous impact a move will have on the Wootton community.

It’s not victim mentality when you actually ARE a victim. I guess Wootton kids don’t belong to their parents anymore. The kids who go to Wootton don’t want to go to Crown, but their opinions don’t seem to matter either.
