Crown boundary study Option H

Anonymous wrote:H is a great option. Wootton get's a brand new school and the Crown community still gets their high school except now it's called Wootton. Also, there is no need to get on 270 to get to Crown but even if they do get on 270, it's going the opposite direction of traffic both too and from the school. I also agree this is a great way to get some diversity into Wootton.

Diversity?? Wootton has 36% Asian, 12% African American and 8% Hispanic. What's the "good quota" for diversity? And why we have to bring the diversity card on any conversations.

Diversity doesn't only mean race...

I mean, MCPS as a whole is 22% African American and 35% Hispanic, so yeah, those groups are very disproportionately under-represented at Wootton. I'm not saying anything about whether that needs to change or not, but you can't pretend that doesn't exist.

On the other hand, yes, a big change and some busing involved. Really not very far busing though so not sure it's that big of a deal. Pulling in some Crown feeders too, so maybe that helps a bit with the Crown community complaints they wouldn't get to utilize the school. Seems to make more sense than the hybrid option G.

Because of the close distance between Wootton and Crown, there are several current Wootton elementary schools that are closer to Crown than Woottton including Dufief, Travilah, Stone Mill. Lakewood is about a mile further from
Crown than Wootton, Fallsmead is about 3 miles further from Crown than Wootton. Cold Spring would have the largest increase in distance to the high school and even that is only 3.5 miles further to Crown than Wootton.

So now we have Cold Spring kids being on the bus for longer period of time when they have a school right around the corner (Churchill). Also, how long will it take for MCPS to start feeding other schools from the county into Crown? To me this is more of a trap for Wotton families and unfortunately we might see some significant impact academically. Crown was build to address the Gaithersburg area schools and not Wotton.

I think it would be GREAT for Wootton families. The Wootton cluster remains totally intact and some other schools get added. I imagine Wootton would keep the high level course offerings it currently has. There isn't room for a ton of other schools and the increased diversity is a GOOD thing.

The Wootton cluster remains intact with the other options as well...

I thought Stone Mill ES got carved out from Wootton in this round. Dufief ES made it back in.

But poor people who live in condos and townhouses like what is by Crown don't care about education and will pull my high achieving child down with them. They will end up hanging out at Rio after school instead of doing homework.

No, they keep Wootton in all four options, option H for them is Crown, but it's really Wootton at Crown. They do have Cabin John as the middle again in several cases (status quo) where in A-D they got moved to Frost.

Don't try to be troll. I believe the majority of Wootton parents don't have that mindset.

There is no official announcement, because there has been no decision. But it is a possible scenario being added to the options.

Wasn't Damascus HS going to use Crown as its holding school? Are they back to building on site at Damascus, continuing to hold classes at the old Damascus HS?

Nothing has been decided yet.

Not even a convincing troll. I've walked around the Crown neighborhood quite a bit, and the houses there are still pretty new and nice and expensive. Even the townhouses start in the $700k+ range and there are plenty of $1m+ single family homes there, too. There are plenty of similarly priced houses in the Wootton cluster.

Yeah. I toured an open SFH house behind Harris teeter last year, and it costed more than 2 million dollars. Can’t define Crown community as poor in that sense.

This is a really good point. All of the feedback from Crown is that the county is trying to take away from the “less affluent Gaithersburg students” but the ones making the most noise are the people living in the newest section closest to the school where the home prices are on par with many Wootton homes, if not even more expensive.

Many of those families aren't poor and your kids will be in different classes. Private sounds like a good option for you. How would you know what kids are doing after school except if you are there yourself?

If Wootton is so bad, this is a good option.

Some Frost kids walk to Wootton for classes. How are they going to do it if Wootton is now 3 miles away?
