I just drove by Crown and there are a bunch of signs at new developments and renovated apartment complexes advertising that Crown is the new Wootton. How much more can they charge home buyers and renters by trading on the Wootton reputation as the #3 high school in the state and #191 in the country?

We don’t care within reason as the teacher quality is more important and we wanted to balance college and grade school savings and making sure we could comfortably pay for both. There are problems at all schools.

Many of us know the weaknesses of mcps and have supplemented from the start. We first did it ourselves and now tutors. We pay for outside sports and arts and private lessons for those too.

Our kids are academically ahead. The only issues we have are the lack of course offerings as mine are at the highest levels in the earlier grades.

You can dismiss families like us but let’s be real, it’s about your ego and wanting to think if you pay more your kids will and should get more.

Fundraise for the repairs. Simple.

Do you know what is considered lower income in moco? Because it’s not a teacher’s salary. Also every single teacher I know (and I know a lot because i’m in the education field-though not a teacher) Has their kid in a high performing school (even if they don’t teach at one) or has them in private if their school is not a good one. Tons of the teachers I know live in the Poolesville cluster-affordable housing and excellent schools.

This is and always has been unrealistic. Educational experiences are dictated by parental involvement in their kids' education, combined with the teachers in the classroom. Parents will want to live in safe neighborhoods among those of the same socioeconomic class. The best teachers will want to work at the best schools. The best schools are filled with kids (and their parents) who want to maximize their educational experience.

The intentions of MCPS are hidden by design, often disguised by the amorphous (and unverifiable) claim that they are acting in the best interests of all kids in MCPS. The more parents whose kids will be affected negatively by an MCPS decision, the less likely this justification is correct. Simple logic dictates that no decision should have a disproportionate negative affect on one group. Here, it's in the best interest of MCPS to keep Wootton as a high-performing school in the neighborhood where it has been for 55 years. OTOH, it's clearly in the best interest of the developers around Crown to move Wootton there so that they can charge 50%+ for their rental apartments and townhouses within walking distance of Crown.

Do you know what is considered lower income in moco? Because it’s not a teacher’s salary. Also every single teacher I know (and I know a lot because i’m in the education field-though not a teacher) Has their kid in a high performing school (even if they don’t teach at one) or has them in private if their school is not a good one. Tons of the teachers I know live in the Poolesville cluster-affordable housing and excellent schools.

You need to get out of your bubble. If they do, they have a high earning spouse or did a cosa to that school.

But Wootton families don’t want Crown. Feel free to give it to one of the other high schools that needs it more. Just remediate a few issues at Wootton. The millions that it will cost to move Wootton and rebrand Crown as Wootton can be used for this purpose.

With that problem solved, why do you really want to move Wootton to Crown? I just drove by Crown and there are a bunch of signs at new developments and renovated apartment complexes advertising that Crown is the new Wootton. How much more can they charge home buyers and renters by trading on the Wootton reputation as the #3 high school in the state and #191 in the country?

Qui bono? Answer that question, and you’ll have the truth.

In the end, however, the decision-making criteria should boil down to providing individuals across the system with reasonably similar overall educational experiences, from courses available to facility conditions to extracurriculars to transportation and beyond, though taken as a whole, as making all, or even any, of these exactly equal for everyone would be hugely inefficient, if not impossible. The closer they can get to a point where people, generally, wouldn't care to which MCPS school their children would be zoned, the more they would know that they are heading in the right direction.

Of course, with respect to this, I have my doubts concerning the intentions of some of the decision makers, from MCPS leadership to BOE members to those on the County Council. We shall see.

Parents will want to live in safe neighborhoods among those of the same socioeconomic class. The best teachers will want to work at the best schools. The intentions of MCPS are hidden by design, often disguised by the amorphous (and unverifiable) claim that they are acting in the best interests of all kids in MCPS. The more parents whose kids will be affected negatively by an MCPS decision, the less likely this justification is correct. Simple logic dictates that no decision should have a disproportionate negative affect on one group. Here, it's in the best interest of MCPS to keep Wootton as a high-performing school in the neighborhood where it has been for 55 years. OTOH, it's clearly in the best interest of the developers around Crown to move Wootton there so that they can charge 50%+ for their rental apartments and townhouses within walking distance of Crown.

How about we close a school you look down on and give your wealthy school their entire funding allocation to make it the greatest school ever as only your kids deserve it, not ours? Wait, that wouldn’t satisfy you either.

Wootton has it all so demanding more when other schools are going without speaks volumes. I doubt every child at Wootton is uber smart and graduating with MVC or higher.

And, nothing wrong with diversity in the schools. You realize those apartments are where county workers and MCPS staff can live to serve you, many of whom have masters degrees but choose a lower paying profession to serve your family and instead of welcoming them you make them unwanted. Who is bragging? There has been comment after comment explaining that Wootton parents (including myself) are in no way rich and simply stretched to be able to provide our children with a great school experience. That being said-we absolutely could not have afforded a house that would have worked for our family in The Whitman cluster. The rich aren’t buying in Wootton. We simply don’t want our school moved and changed-and it will be changed. It’s funny because if you were to give this option to Most any other school they would also oppose-but for some reason Wootton parents are being attacked for this ridiculous option that came out of nowhere. The only people who want it are the people that will directly benefit from their property value increase-that’s it.
