I hear you. Damascus HS won't be completed in renovation until expected August 2031 with either on-site or holding school option. With no other funding or plan to renovate other HS, would mcps leave new Crown HS building vacant from 2027 to 2031? |
No it’s only 2027 fall to 2029 spring (1 year ) and Damascus will move in crown as a holding school. |
To spring of 2028. You're right that Crown would be fallow for only 1 year. On the other hand, they could occupy the new Crown facility with Wootton (plus Crown-proximate Gaithersburg elementaries) right away in the fall of 2027 and use that same year to make the old Wootton building more habitable as a swing space/holding facility. And they would not need to expend nearly as much, then, as they would years later to rebuild Wootton as was the idea with options E, F & G (and even more than with the previous options that did not contain a holding facility in the scenario). And it would serve the immediate Crown/Gaithersburg area, as initially intended when that project was funded. And it would advance some other school in need to be on the schedule after Magruder instead of waiting an additional 2 years while Wootton temporarily occupied Crown. |
If the neighboring areas to Crown went to Wootton at Crown while Wootton was renovated what happens to those kids when Wootton moves back? |
| I think MCPS made a huge mistake with starting Crown. They knew Montgomery County was losing revenue and shrinking but they started building it anyway. |
I don't think Crown was/is in the best location and just because something was given for free, doesn't mean that MCPS had to take it. When King Farm was first built, there was talk about how there was land set aside for a school there. I don't know if it was free or not but a school has never been built there. So blame this on the previous administration or whoever was in charge when the decision was made to take the free land. But I don't blame MCPS for not predicting the declining enrollment. I don't remember when everything started but if there were ever any drop in numbers, MCPS probably thought it was post pandemic related and thought that the numbers would eventually rebound. So think by the time the declining enrollment became apparent that it was an actual thing, the ball was already rolling for Crown and too late to stop it. With all the development that is being talked about, the green area by Rio lake, Lakeforest, the old office park in Derwood, off of Research Blvd, etc will MCPS have to deal with overcrowding and enrollment numbers not matching projections, then have to redo boundaries again a couple of years down the line? |
But that will be well after Wootton is destroyed (and MCPS likely won't even keep the Wootton name because he owned slaves). Wootton is a jewel in the crown (pun intended) of MCPS, and it makes no sense to reset that jewel into a gaudy monstrosity that Wootton didn't ask for.... |
The crown jewel... very funny. No. Why don't all the parents get together and donate to rebuild it if its that important to you. |
It’s a terrible location, right at the exit of I-270. Morning and evening traffic would inevitably back up onto the highway. It’s also uncomfortably close to a major shopping area, which would only encourage students to skip classes. Despite being near several neighborhoods, the site isn’t truly walkable because it’s boxed in by several highways. This kind of shortsighted planning raises serious questions about whether MCPS leadership is capable of making sound decisions at all. |
+100 MCPS knows this but doesn't care. If it did, then it would have never proposed Option H. if there is ever a traffic injury (or g-d forbid, a fatality) involving a Crown student, MCPS will be to blame. |
Blair, Paint Branch, and Julius West, to name a few, are also right off highways. Doesn't seem to be a major concern. |
Have you been crown? Julius west is as close to Highway exit. |
Julius west is not as close. Crown is direct off the ramp |
Have you ever been to Julius West? |
Yes many times. It’s not at the ramp of the highway like crown |
