Harvard’s affirmative action wasn’t based on a reparations rationale for blacks whose descendants suffered in this country. And that was part of the problem here. Tons of recent African immigrants make up the black student population at elite schools. You can go on about European colonialism affecting them I guess but that quickly becomes a less compelling rationale (because every country has some hardship in its past). If you want affirmative action to make up for the treatment of African Americans in THIS country then you have to do it differently than what Harvard/UNC were doing. |
We have always told our kids that now that they achieved the best 4.0 uw/4.6 gpa at a rigorous HS, 35 one - 36 the other ACT and varsity sports, president of clubs, tons of community service: it's basically a lottery at that point for the most selective schools (3-7% acceptance). There are too many kids out there exactly like them (no matter their race). That is easy to digest. What wasn't easy to digest was the neighbor that had one out of 4 hispanic grandparent and is much wealthier than his family and have been in the US generations (early 1900s like ours) was going to get an advantage because he was going to check URM. That is off the table now. |
Asians get more tutoring than anyone, so your point is lost. |
Most notable recent export from Asian countries to the United States has been a crazily hyperintensified form of academics-based concerted cultivation that leads to mental illness among teens and shatters family relationships. Whole grind and drill-and-kill thing based on the avoidable misconception that in America, as in China, there is a single set of high-stakes, "objective" test and performance numbers that determine one's career and life prospects. When the misconception collides with reality, it's time to file lawsuits. Why not accept that the positive aspects of America that drew you here are worth preserving? Perhaps a different educational model was actually at the heart of something potentially valuable in the U.S. culture/economy that enticed you to start a new life in Bethesda or wherever? |
I really appreciate this poster who point-by-point is keeping up with PP’s who make illogical or unequal arguments. |
If you don't agree with the decision of the Supreme Court of this country, you are free to leave my country. |
Agree that there are more privileged "URM"s than anyone, but do not agree when Asians try to say (without admitting it) they are the superior group "best kind". Nope. Wars were fought and won on that very same premise. Do you American History research for real, and not just selectively. You might actually learn something. |
And you, mine! |
yes they care and value educaiton. they spend more money on education than Nike sneakers, so what?? |
Everyone needs to start supplementing with at least 6 hours of tutoring after the regular school day to even out the playing field. Kids need at least 12 hours of school per day. |
+1 Hear, hear! Why come here if you don't like it? Why not attend school in Asia? Oh wait, there is too many people? Yup, same here! Guess what? Same rules apply to EVERYONE now - congratulations?? |
Bet you can tell me the price of buying the tests from the prep place. Hope it was worth it. |

I value education but I do draw the line. These are just kids. I don’t buy expensive shoes. But I tend to shy away from a rat race for kids, they’ll have time to discover how competitive life is while in college. |
Don't forget spies, too though. |
