i think people keep seeing "the board did this" "the board did that"
and they clearly didn't read the article and are assuming that the 'board' in question is the MCPS Board of Education And those people look awfully silly |
The post article also very clearly delineates between the Board and the 4 long standing board members. The board didn't send the letter to Shipley - the 4 long standing board members did. There was a clique of loyalists to Shipley. That doesn't explain the 13-1 vote, but good on that 1 holdout standing alone. |
The story was largely told from the point of view of just-graduated and alum rowers and their families. Perhaps colleges and scholarships were a driving force for them in rowing. But that is not true of the parents or kids I know on the current team. |
Yes. 1 board member and 1 parent were vocal about his misbehavior. 13-1… 13 wanted to say true crew team had the most “commits” and 1 (probably not from the area originally) said this is not worth it. I’m not actually surprised considering the audience. Remember the Bullis lacrosse scandal. Different sides of the same coin. |
| The 2018 Board leadership knew about the accusations he'd had a sexual relationship with a former student "after graduation". Granted the MoCo police didn't do anything about it (my suspicion is the victim wasn't willing to cooperate, but that's just a suspicion) but according to the WaPo article, everyone was informed. |
You know the board in question is not MCPS, right? |
You are the only person confused. |
I agree, man, this is not the willing argument you think it is. Yes, we all get the board of the crew team gave the letter to the coach. the reference to this is the MCPS way is a line meaning that's the way things have been happening in MC public schools. Even though this crew team was organized as a club sport, it's still within Mont Co. It's called the Whitman team, after all. The parent who reported it went all along the chain, including to the school, and there was no action by anyone in any position of authority. |
Thank you. I really appreciate these excellent follow-ups. It does sound like it has the potential to be a great sport at its purest. There have been some very thoughtful posts on here the last couple of days that I want to think about more. A couple posters have discussed how predators are everywhere, and they work in insidious ways. That’s very sadly true, and we’ve all heard about similar happening in every sport and many schools. But it seems that crew has built-in features that make kids more vulnerable to predation. Others have talked about how many parents at Whitman or similar schools in communities with affluent, highly-educated parents “drink the Kool-Aid” and believe their kids can only succeed in life if they end up at top colleges. This is very true, as anyone who has spent time on the college forums can tell you. I think there is a lot of potential danger to kids in communities like this anytime you have a guy like Shipley serving as a gatekeeper to opportunities that kids and parents are very focused on/gunning to obtain. One thing that really struck me from the Post article was the fear of retaliation that kept many of the worried silent. Re the parent who kept trying to get the board and school to act— “She’d pushed the board to take action against him, but ‘no one wanted to say anything. No one wanted to challenge Shipley. It was always the same thing — he’ll retaliate against our kids. I was always the one saying, ‘But we are paying the money, so why shouldn’t we be the ones that are in charge?’ ” If you are afraid of retaliation by a coach or teacher, you need to recognize that you have a very bad situation on your hands. |
The Post quotes the board as apologizing after the coach's arrest, saying that they were "incredibly sorry for the pain and anguish" experienced by athletes and their families. I'd say they've acknowledged their mistakes and shown remorse. |
What is your obsession with defending the Board, PP? You must understand how lame that ridiculous apology was given that, as the PP pointed out, the Board had just voted to rehire Shipley after the second investigation that found he behaved in many abusive and inappropriate ways. The apology was nothing more than a desperate CYA effort. They look terrible for rehiring him just a few weeks before his arrest, and they know it. They lack of care they took in all of this is astonishing. |
That's really pathetic if you care more about college scholarships than your child's well-being. Most of those kids parents CAN afford to pay for college. |
No they renewed his contract weeks before he was arrested even though there was a clear pattern of abuse by the coach for years. Sure it wasn't sexual abuse but is that the only type of abuse female athletes have to suffer to be heard? |
I am the Whitman crew parent, and I think you are over-spinning what I said. But I take your point. Know that one is trying to get off the hook here. Meantime, the board has offered free counseling services to current and former rowers (and maybe their families--I'm not positive about that). The counseling is being paid for with donations. Maybe you have suggestions for what else the team could do. |
| I’m so sorry for all the girls involved. |
