Then relocation of Key wouldn't matter to PP. |
I welcome PP to clarify, but no elem starts before 8 (b/c middle school still using buses), so I can’t imagine any scenario where an elementary student is on the bus for 70-130 minutes! I prefer to just assume PP is misinformed rather than misleading. |
No they did not. They got rid of geographical preference for admission (meaning the Claremont neighbohood used to have guaranteed admission, and they dropped that. From the APS site: Claremont: Population it serves — Kindergarten to 5th grade. Serves students from the following elementary school attendance areas: Abingdon, Ashlawn, Barcroft, Carlin Springs, Drew Model, Hoffman-Boston, McKinley, Nottingham, Oakridge, Tuckahoe, and Randolph. Key: Population it Serves — Kindergarten to 5th grade. Serves students from the following elementary school attendance areas: Arlington Science Focus/Key, Barrett, Discovery, Glebe, Henry, Jamestown, Long Branch, and Taylor. |
I don't think it is possible for a Key student to have a 6:50 bus pick up time. But it is very possible for Claremont, think about students who live near Nottingham. |
| That list might explain why Key has trouble getting to 50% Spanish speakers. It weighs heavily towards wealthier NA schools. |
Claremont isn't getting 50% either. |
Disregard. I wasn’t sure but that popped out at me. |
It does make sense and Claremont has gotten more Spanish speakers in the lottery than Key, but both schools are primarily attracting English speakers. https://www.apsva.us/school-options/school-transfer-data-2/pre-k-elementary-options-transfers-application-data-school-year-2019-20/ |
| Campbell starts at 8 am and there are children attending from near Jamestown who have 6:50 am bus pick up times. |
Is that because there are less than a busload of kids who attend there from all the schools in North Arlington combined and that bus gets all of them? Last year's transfer report only showed 17 from north of 50. |
Campbell didn't used to be open to the whole county. Technically, yes; but it was filled with the preferred attendance area and there wasn't room for transfers from north arlington. Now it is a countywide option program; so perhaps the numbers will begin to change - and the transportation will change as needed. People should also keep in mind that bell times can be changed. APS is looking at bell times; so there may be some schedule changes in the pipeline. |
When we looked at it before it opened to the whole county parents had to provide transportation if you weren’t in the area. |
But now that it is a countywide program with no geographical preferences, transportation is provided. |
| People from NA who send their kids to Campbell generally do so because the school is so crunchy and easier for kids with learning and behavioral problems. SA parents too, and some escaping even higher poverty schools. But, there are so few open slots at Campbell due to the huge VPI program that I don't think APS will prioritize making the NA kids' bus shorter. |
| Some people choose Campbell for the expeditionary learning and the outdoor learning components. I agree that there’s not much opportunity to get in. 3 VPI classes, 3 kindergarten Classes. Open to the whole county? Not in reality. Makes me annoyed actually. |
