UVA student missing

Because there were two sexual assaults in the vicinity of where Hannah said that she was lost (14th and Wertland) shortly after she disappeared. I would hate for this guy to be falsely accused and end up driving into a wall, killing himself, only to find that even more girls go missing in Charlottesville. That's why.

Wow. Active imagination. He will be fine, unless he took her back to his room and she is still missing. Some explaining to do.

I wonder if they have searched the fields where Morgan Harrington's body was found.

Let's not loose sight that before Hannah went missing, someone provided her with alcohol whereby she became "disoriented" and couldn't find her way home or her friends. Whoever gave her alcohol should be kicked out of the school. Disoriented is a nice way to say she was probably buzzed or drunk.

She chose to drink it

Still illegal to provide alcohol to a minor. And it's possible that someone could have slipped something else into her drink.

Omg. A minor was drinking alcohol?! Call the cops!

Did you see the grief on her parents' faces and hear the grief in her dad's voice as they shared their fears? I'm sure they wish someone had cared enough to not serve alcohol to their minor daughter.

You clearly don't have a child in college and maybe you never went to college yourself.

This ski and snowboard organization, if found responsible for serving her alcohol, could result in a lawsuit against the school. Those kids in that org who were responsible should be kicked out.

Please let's concentrate on finding Hannah. This really does not help do that.

If they served her alcohol, they contributed to her being disoriented and disappearance. They all should be hauled down there and questioned.

How do party throwers police the alcohol at their parties? It would be weird for them to ID guests.

But why is he running like crazy if he wasn't involved? If I were hanging out innocently with someone who disappeared, I'd be at the police station immediately telling them what I knew.

Because, if I were him (a young black male) and I found out I was the last person to see a white teenage girl before she went missing, I would be terrified. They are on a mission and were focused on him before this whole station thing went down - all it took was seeing that they were together on video. The justice system isn't always fair and if I was on his end I would be scared as hell if I was innocent. The police have NO IDEA what happened after he was with her and if he can't explain it, he's not in a good position.

Oh please. Initially the video/reports focused on a white guy. This whole THEYRE AFTER HIM BECAUSE HE IS BLACK thing is ridiculous. They're after him because he was the last one seen with her and now he has fled.

PP here - I never said anything about them going after him because he is black. I said I would be terrified if I were him and I were innocent because - let's be honest - people WANT it to be him. If the police don't know what happened to her after he left her (if he is innocent), he'll still be the fall guy.

If he is innocent and is the fall guy, it is his own fault. The story was all over the news in less than 24 hours after her disappearance. He could have come forward with helpful information immediately. Apparently, the other lurker called the tip and spoke to the police directly. This is what an innocent person does. If he was on drugs that night or whatever, he could have asked for immunity in exchange for providing crucial information about his time with her.

Agree completely.

Do you serve alcohol to your kids underage friends or something? You don't seem to understand the law.

The answer is that usually they don't is guests, obviously. But in college, usually only seniors are of legal drinking age, and some juniors. Not that hard to have that info among friends. Besides, wasn't the party at a restaurant? They should have id'd her for sure.

I'm curious about the lawyer thing.

First thought: what the hell did the lawyer say to him that led to him fleeing town?

Second thought: did the police trick him and give him a "lawyer" who was actually a prosecutor? He wasn't charged with anything at the time and thus had no right to an attorney. Police are allowed a lot of latitude in dealing with potential suspects. They are allowed to lie. If he was charged and asked for a lawyer they'd have to give him a real defense attorney, but with no charges and him not being detained, I think they could have sent anyone in as his "lawyer."

*I'm a lawyer but not a criminal lawyer. Pure speculation and conjecture on my part. I just find it interesting that he fled right after meeting with a lawyer.

That's a good question.
If JM wasn't charged with a crime, why / how did he ask for a lawyer?
And was he granted one?

Why did he flee Charlottesville? He looks creepy ... And acts guilty!

I think that people simply want this girl found. No one wants to see an innocent person nailed for her disappearance. But if he is responsible for this girl's disappearance - yes, he needs to be held accountable.

If he did it, he should get the chair.

Because they searched his car, his apartment and were following him. I think he is guilty but I would ask for a lawyer under the same circumstances.

There are a lot of people at parties and the alcohol is available to pretty much anyone. And no one knows everyone so they don't know the ages.

No sympathy here. He was likely the last person to see her alive and will not answer any questions. If the police have to lie in order to obtain information, keep a potential murderer and rapist off the streets and bring some closure to Hannah's parents, I have no issue with that.

I don't think he asked for a lawyer--- which makes sense if he hasn't been charged with anything -- but said that he didn't want to talk anymore and wanted to speak to an attorney. The chief said they didn't know if he actually retained anyone.
