Like has been said before, it’s not unusual with a new principal. A new principal shouldn’t possibly be expected to replicate the exact same environment as a previous principal. And some of the people leaving are not even classroom teachers.

Stop saying that-every teacher/specialist keeps these schools working properly. If you are losing SPED and ESOL....art or music, etc it is a loss to a school and everyone feels that loss.

I didn’t say it wasn’t a loss - but it’s incorrect to state that 24 TEACHERS are leaving. I think classroom teaching positions are harder to fill than say a counselor or a librarian. So if people are worried about filling those spots you don’t need to be. Likewise, whole teams aren’t actually leaving as was stated. Previous posters are being dramatic to try to prove some point. At least half the number of STAFF leaving are aides, counselors, librarian, and resource teachers. Yes the school will look different but I have complete confidence it will be ok come fall.

Incorrect! More than half are classroom teachers. 17 to be exact. Yes, one taught esol this year but she was a classroom teacher before that and she was phenomenal. Another one is a math resource that my older kid had as a classroom teacher several years ago and she was also a wonderful teacher. It's a big loss no matter how you want to label it. One of the counselors has been there forever and was amazing. I suggest you put down whatever it is you are smoking.

The counselors are handling all of the behaviors in the schools and aides are needed for special ed to function. I don’t have data on how hard it is to find instructional assistants but I assume it’s as difficult as finding subs. I work at a title one with a lot of big behaviors and high turnover and we are a similar size to Navy and we only lost 13 staff members. For an AAP center school in a wealthy area to lose that many staff members at once shows that something went wrong.

Yes, what happened was the old lax principal drove drunk and fled the scene and was convicted of a DUI. So we had to get a new principal who is fresh off the boat. He is following county guidelines strictly because he himself is new and has to answer to higher ups. Most of the staff leaving for new positions within the country adored the old principal. It makes sense for them to leave since the old principal is no longer here. The old principal is who hired most of them!!!

But there are a lot of staff members on the list who are actually leaving FCPS due to actually moving or what not. I think we will really be able to tell only after another year. If this same amount leaves then, I will eat crow. My guess is it will settle down because they will all be hires from the new principal.

The boat is sinking.

Let’s see what happens after next year. I’m so sick of the panicking. Yes we are losing some beloved staff, but they were also huge Jon supporters. We all know Jon was lax and let the teachers run the show. He was there a long time and after so long you loosen up. The new principal isn’t like that - yet. Give him a chance. I have no doubt in a few years it will be great again under the new guys I’m not going to lose sleep over 12 classroom teachers and bunch of support staff leaving who weren’t even hired by the new principal. Did your kid have a good year this last year? Mine did. That’s what I’m focusing on.

Teacher shortage. It's already end of June. Window for transferring from within FCPS has closed. We must panic!!!

Maybe the new principal doesn’t want so many transfers from within FCPS. He can do new hires over the summer too you know.

I sure hope so but why did he wait until summer to hire? If you wait until summer, you have slim pickings. You are reliant on what's leftover from the college grad pool that no one else has hired and people that may be relocating to the very expensive area. Am I wrong?

He’s doing damage control. He’s trying to downplay the huge turnover. His email was trying to make it sound like a majority of the staff were leaving for personal reasons. While for a few that’s true, most of them left because of the incompetence of the current administration.

There’s going to be another large turnover at Navy next year. Pin this post so I can say “Told you so.”

My guess is there won’t be since he is hiring the 24 new members himself. They won’t have any expectation of what the job was like under the previous administration.

I’m the PP who worked in a school with similar turnover.

The instability will extend into this year. Nothing within a school exists in a vacuum and new teachers will feel it.

When this happened to me, we had 3 years of major turnovers resulting in a disconnected staff with low morale. I finally left, as well.

A principal can’t interview or hire until the current employee has actually put in paperwork that they are leaving. Many teachers wait until the literal last minute. And in this teacher shortage era, many put in their notice after the deadline and still get hired in neighboring counties. It’s possible that these employees didn’t turn in notice “until the summer” so the interviews can’t happen “until the summer.”

Yes. Schools never rely solely on transfers to staff their school. See post regarding when teachers have to give notice of leaving. A lot of times transfer teachers aren’t even good anyway.

Plenty of teachers left after the year with the interim principal even before the new principal even started.

Can you give a specific example of incompetence? And are you referring to the actual principal or one of the APs?

Both. I'm not going to list specifics as it might come back and jeopordize departing and remaining staff members. Also I'm genuinley not on here to go after the guy. He seem's like a nice person and means well. Just being a Principal may not be the right position for him. But I think several years from now, the facts will show. It's just unfortunate that in the meantime, its that staff and Navy community that will be impacted.

Fair enough. It’s also possible things will settle down as he continues to get his feet wet. We don’t know. I do know that many of the new teachers he hired were very popular with the community. I know my kid had a great year at Navy this past year. We liked the new principal. I believe he didn’t get swayed by gossip or the clique and probably held teachers accountable to some new standards they weren’t used to. I also know there were some tough classes with certain kids with severe behavioral issues - I’m sure that played a part as well.

We need to place blame where it belongs - on the former principal who made bad choices and wrecked the school.

It’s also probably not the right position for someone who drunk drives their car into a house and flees the scene, but that didn’t seem to stop a good portion of the staff from defending him. So unless these ‘facts’ are equally as reckless, I’m really not interested.

Yes. This.

The parental community really hasn’t been impacted. School was fully staffed this past year despite teachers leaving at the end of last year. Many kids had a wonderful year this year with the new principal. Sorry some of the staff didn’t - it looks like those who didn’t have moved on - hope they will like their next place better. Next year will look different but I’m excited to have the negativity gone!

I will add that holding teachers accountable is not the reason for departures. He's not a mean person nor is he a micro manager. I'm finger pointing at you but comments posted by others saying the staff was lazy and lax under Jon and didn't like being held at a different standard under the current regime is completly untrue.

Since you mentioned it, I will say you are spot on with some behavioral issues. Multiple repeat instances where things were escalated to Admin and nothing was done or handled. His personality seems like he's non-confrontational and passive. But in a leadership postion, you need to support your staff and take charge.
