Why do staunch republicans hate electric vehicles?

EVs are "paper straw" environmentalism. The goal is to maximize cost/inconvenience and minimize the environmental impact, so that everyone can pat themselves on the back at how good they are and then do it again, and again...

This is just flatly wrong but you want to spew what you want to spew

EVs are part of the solution. The other part is renewable energy to power those EVs. We are getting there with both of these things. You have to ramp up both of these things at the same time. Which is happening. We have an EV and we have solar panels that power it. We are paying zero for electricity (net metering) and zero for running the car. Yes, it was an investment. But an investment that is paying off in more than one way. We still have power left over to send back to the grid so we also get a check for around 1300 every year (so far). We also have a Powerwall which has kicked in at various times and so we have not suffered a power outage in years.

Even if we run with your whining about "paper straw environmentalism," in the grand scheme of things it's STILL better than ICE pollution and consumption of dwindling resources.

^When it is economically favorable, people will buy EVs and solar panels. That time is upon us and the Rs don't like it because they are sucking at the teat of oil/gas interests. Trump is taking money from big oil and he promised them he would stop EVs.

Okay. Then what can we do that would make a difference? Is there anything that everyone can agree on?

How about you focus on cleaning up Superfund sites? Finish something you started for the first time.

PP is correct.

"What Trump promised oil CEOs as he asked them to steer $1 billion to his campaign"
Donald Trump has pledged to scrap President Biden’s policies on electric vehicles and wind energy, as well as other initiatives opposed by the fossil fuel industry.

As Donald Trump sat with some of the country’s top oil executives at his Mar-a-Lago Club last month, one executive complained about how they continued to face burdensome environmental regulations despite spending $400 million to lobby the Biden administration in the last year. Trump’s response stunned several of the executives in the room overlooking the ocean: You all are wealthy enough, he said, that you should raise $1 billion to return me to the White House. At the dinner, he vowed to immediately reverse dozens of President Biden’s environmental rules and policies and stop new ones from being enacted, according to people with knowledge of the meeting, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe a private conversation. Giving $1 billion would be a “deal,” Trump said, because of the taxation and regulation they would avoid thanks to him, according to the people.

And just today we have a massive battery plant fire killing 22 and counting: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/crgggmeyjj7o

That's probably really good for the environment. Almost as good as when an EV fire destroyed an entire container ship: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/cargo-ship-fire-netherlands-ev-electric-vehicle-battery-north-sea-freemantle-highway/

They also are three times as likely to hit pedestrians in urban areas: https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/may/21/electric-cars-more-likely-to-hit-pedestrians-than-petrol-vehicles-study-finds

People also give EVs a pass on their brake dust and microplastics from tires. But heavy vehicles that are driven aggressively create tons of that too: https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1135980_evs-emit-more-brake-dust-which-the-eu-is-stepping-up-to-regulate

So EVs are harmful to workers, transport, pedestrians and anyone that wants to breathe clean air, but people can pat themselves on the back over leasing one for a few years before they hit the crusher. All to preserve the suburban dream of living nowhere near anything for one more generation.

Good thing there are never fires at oil refineries, pipelines, drilling platforms, trains, gas stations, storage facilities…

You didn’t think this through did you?

If you are worried about heavier vehicles and danger to pedestrians then you should worry about Americans’ love affair with SUVs and pickup trucks. Whether those vehicles are EVs or not is trivial by comparison.

RIPS into the Biden administration’s green energy push for driving up inflation while at the same time diverting taxpayer dollars to wealthy Democrat donors:

The American people have understood that Biden’s green energy policies have led to the inflation that they are all feeling today…The AP reported that spending that drove up inflation all went back into the pockets of Democrats.”

Who is Dana Perino and why should I care what she says?

Biden got the ADVANCE Act through Congress. Should help us add some nuclear to the mix. Which is necessary.

Nuclear powered cars. Now that is something I could support.

Haha. Well, I've warmed to the idea of nuclear power over the years, but I'm not quite up to taking a nuke out on the road!

I’d personally love to carry a nuclear warhead with my on my bike rides. It would make drivers be more careful when passing me. We can *both* lose
