Oakton crash

This has to have a term - whats it called when people have to obsess over tragedy and throw in their two cents/claim to knowing the exact intersection or connection to the death? Like congrats your daughter goes to Oakton, we absolutely needed that input.

Grief porn.

I’m this PP and apologies if this comes across as insensitive. There is something psychological here at play though where people who have absolutely nothing to do with a tragedy or story in the news feel compelled to state their tenuous relationship to the story to somehow show involvement.

It is almost certainly being straight indicted with a grand jury. So, yes, give it a few days.

And knowing dcum as a both a frequent PP and multiple times a day checker, I expect that I’ll find out breaking news on this case here, in this thread .

Yes, there is a term for it. It's called empathy.

Right, now people expressing empathy are attacked because they feel sad. Oakton/Vienna HS is a crowded residential area and lots of people travel through Blake ln everyday. The memorial is right there, it’s a reminder to everyone of us who drive/ride/walk on that street everyday that a tragedy happened there. We don’t have the right to express that sadness?? And yeah that empathy helps raise funds for the impacted families. It’s a good thing. Please don’t trash on other people’s feeling.

I’m just saying, you can express empathy and sadness without having to state how close you live or work etc. No one cares, it’s not important. It doesn’t make you more special or in the know to live by the intersection. It just looks weird when people are commenting things like I drive on that road! Is this a popularity contest?

JFC. Since when is driving on Blake Lane popular??

If you can't understand human emotions and reactions to tragedy as simple as this, you should look within rather than judging others.

Popularity contest was facetious. I’m sure others feel the same way- it’s a weird reaction for everyone to immediately comment and post about their proximity to a tragedy.

Seriously?!? It's a foreign concept to you that proximity affects empathy?? Do a basic Google search to see how this is very common. We react to things that are close to us differently from things that are on the other side of world. If you can imagine yourself being in someone else's shoes, in this case by driving or walking on that road, you will have more empathy than in the case when you can't even see yourself in someone else's position. This is not rocket science.

I take it you’re one of the people commenting in VF or on this post about how close you are to Blake Lane. Got it.

Your take is wrong, but based on this interaction, you must be very used to being wrong.

I’m in that group, I live right around the corner, I didn’t know the families personally, I didn’t post, but I don’t have any problem with those who posted on VF. End of story. People in this country is overly judgmental on the smallest most trivial stuff.

I’m not judgemental. I’m a millennial who finds boomers and Gen X to be extremely cringey and weird on Facebook.

Most of the local community knows the name as do all of the Oakton students
The students have indicated they want a harsh punishment
One of his friends was interviewed on the news and no longer is a friend.
So I think the community has started to speak out

Who fled? The driver?
Anonymous
The driver didn’t flee but the two backseat passengers per the interview of fcpd
It’s still online.

So will this be an accident or manslaughter?

Will his identity be released? Anyone here have kids that know who it was? Anyone call BMW at Tyson’s corner and say you’ll buy a car if the rep tells who bought it?

Why do you need to know his identity? If you don't know it already, you must not be in the area. My kid goes to Madison and he knows who the driver was (and, in turn, told me).

What? Why would residents know all the high schoolers? That’s presumptive and weird. You know not every resident has a high schooler?

So, why do you need to know the name again?

He’s 18. It’ll be released.

The driver should be required to observe the 2 funerals via closed circuit tv from a jail cell.

Two girls were just killed due to his and his parents negligence.

Maybe they are waiting until after the funerals before announcing charges, out of respect for the families.
