Stop inciting panic. Quarantines are useless at this point and the best course is to ride the wave. Currently, the death rate is centralized in elderly, above 80+ and those that are immunocomprimised. Again, it follows similar patterns of previous novel viruses. The biggest risk is mutation in the virus which makes it worse. Up until that point, it's probably better to be exposed to the virus strain early on so your body builds antibodies naturally. Given the characteristics of this virus, there's no way to stop it but there's no reason to panic over it either.

This.

Then China, Italy, Iran, S Korea, etc should just say screw it and let people on their merry way.

Ride the wave Iran.
Ride the wave China.
Ride the wave Italy.

No need for airport screenings, travel advisories or cancelled flights by the airlines. Everyone’s f’d anyway, so open the flood gates already.

It's about balancing risks. By shutting cities, school, etc. there is a MASSIVE economic cost. Has the quarantining been successful anywhere so far? It's really tough to say yes.

Half way quarantine doesn’t work

There's only so much you can do. China tried. Failed.

China has entirely shut down cities and provinces and it has slowed spread.

It’s not a failure if it is slowing the inevitable spread. This gives time for other countries to prepare, time to research vaccine possibilities or in the case of the US, time to make an effective testing kit.

That’s why the CDC and WHO guidance is lacking. Yes, proper preventative measures can slow down the economy but it can rebound faster. An all out pandemic with outbreaks in a number of places at the same time is much worse for the economy and its recovery long term. But as usual, we function as kick the can down the road economic thinking.

My guess - They don’t have a clue what to do yet. They are trying to prevent panic while they figure it out.

Which is amazingly pathetic.

They've had at least six weeks to at least figure out the basic steps of gaining confidence of the public through good information. And there should have been plent of mateial there to build on from previous examples like Ebola and SARS both here and in other countries. Singapore is so good because they took their SARS lessons to heart.

I agree. The point of quarantines is to slow the spread so you avoid huge spikes in people needed the really intensive hospital care at the same time. By slowing the spread you are not reducing the total number of cases you'll have over time but rather giving those who get it a better shot at having good medical treatment available.

Are countries who have some cases that recovered better of then those with no cases since apparently blood plasma from those patients who recovered, is at this point not only the only successful treatment but it also make people condition improve fast and have them recover. So in theory and in practice if a country has recovered cases then the country can treat sick who then recover and can give plasma for new sick patients who will recover and on and on and on.. so in a strange way at this point countries with no cases are in tough spot if it will hit them fast.

Chinese doctors using plasma therapy on coronavirus, WHO says 'very valid' approach

SHANGHAI/GENEVA (Reuters) - Doctors in Shanghai are using infusions of blood plasma from people who have recovered from the coronavirus to treat those still battling the infection, reporting some encouraging preliminary results, a Chinese professor said on Monday.
A top emergency expert at the World Health Organization (WHO) said later that using convalescent plasma was a “very valid” approach to test, but that it was important to get the timing right to maximize the boost to a patient’s immunity.[url]

If they were testing. Maybe they weren’t. Just like we haven’t.

Should we stock up on supplies? How will medical workers be protected? Are there enough masks and medical supplies? How will we know the virus is spreading if so little testing is being done? These are pretty obvious questions and we are not seeing clear answers. We have this information for other events such as natural disasters but this is new and we don’t know what to expect.

CDC can only make recommendations. They don't set policy, and they don't coordinate emergency responses. All the policy and logistics are handled through HHS, and Every. Single. Decision. is politicized by the White House focused on re-election.

10 percent of people who get it need to be hospitalized with breathing assistance though. That’s far more than for seasonal flu and they need to be in the hospitalized for weeks. We can’t handle that many cases.

Technically we should just secure huge amount of ventilators as patients need mostly just oxygen support, then you convert any given hotel into 1000 bed hospital. In the time of epidemic law allows for such measures.
Anonymous
It is only most extreme cases needing ventilators. Can they use those small oxygen generators you see older people using in commercials on tv for lesser cases? This also helps you breath by supplying oxygen, it is not ventilator but provides the oxygen that is needed when lungs are inflamed and normal breathing does not provide enough oxygen from the air.
