Spanking

Somewhat surprised by the discipline thread, I was wondering if there are a lot of parents who still spank their kids?

Troll? OK, here goes. I did a few times when they were between 4 and 8. Haven't had to in a loong time. Kids are now 8 and 11.

We did with my first two on more than a few occasions, between about 3 and 8. It definitely worked then. My youngest now has had a couple spankings, but it's much rarer.

Yes, they do. Read the latest studies. People still spank 6 month olds!

Yes, many/most parents still spank, occasionally or frequently.

Depending on the study, 50-90% of parents have spanked their minor children.

I've got 4 kids - oldest is 24. In general, I don't know of any of my kids friends who get spanked.

I think it's more common in the South, and among less educated people since so many studies have come out in the last decade or so saying that it doesn't work as a discipline technique (otherwise you'd only ever do it once).

I've never spanked. I've grabbed arms, and I've clenched my own fists to keep from hitting because I know I have a temper.

We don't but I'm not sure it wouldn't be helpful with 5 year old DS, to be honest. Wouldn't do it with my 2 year old, since I don't think he understands consequences well enough at this point.

I've consistently seen that if you ask parents if they spank, maybe two thirds will say yes. But if you ask parents of three-year-olds, about 90% will say that they have spanked in the past year.

For what it's worth, we never spank as an angry reaction.

Never. But I know some parents who do.

Well, if something like 90% of parents spank, and majority of all parents, including the educated ones, don't live in the south, then I'd say some educated parents and those not living in the South also do spank.

I have, and in our neighborhood it's not at all uncommon (although I'm sure not universal).

I am educated, do not live in the South, and I spank.

Curious definition of a discipline technique -- I wasn't aware that time outs were supposed to work the first time, that you only need to do it once. Or that you only need one check on a reward chart, that you only need to do it once. Do those not work as discipline techniques either?
