Wuhan virus (coronavirus) arrives in the USA

The Atlantic - You're Likely to Get the Coronavirus

As the article says, it will actually be better when we stop believing this is the problem of a few countries and start to realize that it's the whole world's problem.

It's not going to be contained, and once that becomes apparent, governments will stop quarantining people, which is unsustainable at this point.

The fact that this is spreading in the Middle East...is bad.

Video diary from a man quarantined in one of the Italian towns. At the end he says he has friends who've had the coronavirus and told him not to worry, that it's just a "strong fever" for a few days. Sounds like it's been in Italy for a while.

I bought some of these recently :

I bought them because I have to wear them for some outdoor things during allergy season, and couldn’t find any locally.

From nearly a month ago: 3M ramping up mask production to 24/7 to meet demand.

There were probably thinking of export plus some allowance for preppers here stocking up, creating a shortage.

Thank you for the suggestion but both Lowe's and Home Depot are sold out. I tried the Germantown Walmart per a PP's suggestion but they didn't have anything either.

Does anyone have any other thoughts or suggestions? Anything would be appreciated.

All these stores have been low stock/sold out for over a month now. My DH went to look shortly after the news broke in January, and had found some at the local paint store. Maybe it's worth a look to see if they still have any left.

NHS in Britain has issued the following advice, which is causing some havoc in schools, since many students and staff just spent their mid-winter break skiing in Northern Italy.

If you have returned from these specific areas since 19 February, you should call NHS111 and stay indoors and avoid contact with other people even if you do not have symptoms:

Iran.
Specific lockdown areas in northern Italy as designated by the government of Italy.
Special care zones in South Korea as designated by the government of the Republic of South Korea.
Hubei province (returned in the past 14 days).

If you have returned from these areas since 19 February and develop symptoms, however mild, you should stay indoors at home and avoid contact with other people immediately and call NHS111. You do not need to follow this advice if you have no symptoms:

Northern Italy (defined by a line above, and not including, Pisa, Florence and Rimini).
Vietnam.
Cambodia.
Laos.
Myanmar.

I suspect it is already in Saudi Arabia.

The Eastern province has many Shi'ites who no doubt have visited Qom in recent weeks. In addition, there has been longstanding intermarriage between Shi'ites there and in the southern part of Iran, resulting in frequent family visits.

Then there is the causeway with Bahrain.

Instead of retail therapy for your anxiety, how about OCD handwashing? More effective!

What’s the criteria?

The cat's out of the bag and it isn't going back in. Unless you are going to wear a mask for the rest of your life, there is probably no point. This virus is here to stay and it sounds like it will keep killing. Over time, we will likely develop some kinds of immunity to it. Maybe it will weaken and become like any other cold. Honestly, the human race gets what it deserves. We've known this is a risk for a long time. Didn't stop folks from eating wild animals, however, and it won't stop them now. Most of us will be fine and recover. Some will not.

For now, I've stocked up on a few non-perishables and stopped taking the Metro. It would be good if we could at least get a handle on what treatments are most effective before most of us get sick. I figure if I can delay getting it for a few months, that will be best.

The Korean Air cabin crew have been wearing masks in all their flights since last month. But yeah, that’s clearly been shown as not being enough.

This is why I was wondering why the entire army base in S.Korea shut down after one lady shopped at the exchange and left. Yet, everyone else is told to just wash their hands and cover their mouth if they cough and go about their life.

No precautions against travel other than to China, no precautions about big public gatherings, no one saying hey don’t book that plane ticket where you’ll be in a cabin with recirculated air for multiple hours. No reduced flights from the hotspots in S.Korea, Italy, Iran. And lots of countries still accepting flights without any screening from China. Many of which are countries that Americans are flying to for spring break.

Many of us will then be working side by side with or going to school side by side with people who are carrying on with travel and life as usual until the spread is so widespread and uncontainable that the WHO will finally speak up.

The government wants to keep the economy strong. Businesses will take a huge hit if travel is restricted and people don’t go out and shop.

Lowe’s has them available online.

I feel like a read a book somewhere that said this is basically what colds were like when they made the leap to humans and then they mutated to just become annoying.

I heard an audio clip indicating that they actually don’t do that anymore because it doesn’t affect their advise and only causes anxiety. The man went in to say that it hadn’t risen to that level yet anyway

I think the US has just given up on preventing it from coming here. You basically hear nothing about it. My kid who’s now riding the bus with kids who just returned from Vietnam goes to scouts, karate, and indoor soccer. It would spread like wildfire. I feel let down by our governments response.
