Superintendent's Recommendation for Richard Montgomery ES #5 Boundaries

Anonymous
New Mark has had meetings with the City of Rockville and the BOE because they did not want the 29% FARMS rate. So RP got a 40% FARMS rate?
Anonymous
Well, the Hungerford Civic Association received what they requested. Just watched the November 8th meeting (http://mcpsmd.swagit.com/play/11082017-1385 start video at 52:00) and their concerns have been addressed with the new recommendations. I am not opposed to the changes if this is what the community is asking for.

No, what New Mark and Hungerford opposed was the Superintendent coming out of left field and proposing something different from what any of the 8 debated options were, and with a dramatically imbalanced FARMS rate (53%) that ignored research about the importance of socioeconomic diversity for closing the achievement gap.

40% for RP doesn't make any sense either. I really can't fathom the Superintendent's thinking.

1. There was never 53% FARMS. Stop the exaggeration. It was 42%

2. That data was incorrect. The new data showed it was actually not 42% but 29%

3. New Mark and Hungerford invalid complaints screwed every single school/community and multiple sections and it is now a chaotic 3 ring circus.

I agree options 1 and 2 seem crazy, but 3 might work. However, I’m not at all convinced anyone with access to the real numbers has actually tried to make a logical plan, that’s ridiculous. I usually have really low expectations for MCPS, but ignoring the obvious need to build out the shell for months and also miscalculating the numbers in multiple ways is even lower than I imagined.

42% including Chinese Immersion, but 53% in the nonimmersion classrooms. And all the feedback was taking the Superintendent's data at face value. He's withdrawn that recommendation now that the numbers are right. No neighborhood is screwing any other. They all should lobby for their interests. The Superintendent's 1st option makes no sense, but his other two are at least closer to some of the original 8 options.

1992: Horizon Hill - can you walk to Wootton High School? Yes. Too bad - we are moving you to RIchard Montgomery. Home value decreases by 75-100K.

2017: Horizon Hill - can you walk to Ritchie Park? Yes. Too bad - we are bussing you past RP and RM5 to Twinbrook. Home values decrease by ??

LOL. That neighborhood is gonna lose their $HIT!!!

Exactly. What a bunch of BS. They were complaining when the FARMS rate was 29% and their school is in a low income neighborhood!!! Now we have RP in a upper middle class neighborhood getting a bunch of poor neighborhoods being busses to it and double the farms rate past 40%.

Did anyone from RP said that they don't want to see 7% FARMs rate in RP or all of you were happy to not have any FARMs kids from other side of 270?

All I saw that RP was trying to argue to not take any kids from other side of 270. If RP had agreed to take some FARMs kids from RP2 then situation would have been much better.

Also, CG3 needs to stop talking about this neighborhood crap to be honest. New school is coming, Let's move whoever we need to move.

Can we charge their civic association for pain and suffering?

Horizon Hill-could you go to cold spring which is under enrolled? NOPE. First you habe to go to the overcrowded school with the terrible principal before you get bussed across town. Poor Horizon Hill. You got really screwed.

Right! Why DOESN'T Horizon Hill go to Cold Spring? They are under-enrolled by 150 students now, with no growth in the near future. Surely Horizon Hill could fit there and relieve some overcrowding in Ritchie Park and the rest of the cluster. Then they could go back to JW and RM for middle and high school so the Wootton people don't get upset. I know that ship has sailed, but that small move could have been made years ago in the same way the BoE is planning to move Rachel Carson students to DuFief to relieve their overcrowding.

Feels like someone is trolling this thread to create animosity amongst the RM neighborhood. When Super came up with his proposal, no oine was happy because the cluster would have 2 schoolsd that have very high farms, that's when Hungerford stepped in with their proposal. Because the Farms are distributed better than what the Super proposed, capacity is also below on all schools. The acknowledgement that supers number is off came up after Hungerford proposal. Im not from this neighborthood but i dontg get t he bashing

I am an RP2 parent. That neighborhood is actually very socioeconomically diverse, but as drawn does include a number of low income apartments. And quite a lot of students. Personally, I would be happy to go to the new school, or Beall which is just as close for parts of the section. And RP is ok too. But how awesome that the Super gives us a special shout out as a chess piece in his written summary! We’ve been a gerrymandered section for years, and it hasn’t really been a problem. Even though neighbors on all sides have always gone to another school. RP2 could also probably be divided, and even divided, I bet the FARMs numbers would decent in each segment. There are so many ways to do this. Obviously too many. I don’t know where I am going here. Just would have preferred to go to the new school and feel frustrated that we can’t seem to come to a consensus.
