The only time I’ve seen a service member punished for an affair under UCMJ was if the affair partner was another service member’s spouse (makes for some hard feelings at work!) or if the affair partner was also a service member and it was fraternization, or if the affair comprised their duty/mission/security.

A National Gaurd solider having an affair with a civilian is unlikely to be prosecuted, which is exactly why he wasn’t.

They don’t necessarily get punished under UCMJ, but they do get sidelined. And the stigma that comes with making bad decisions follows them professionally. It’s going to require some serious acting skills for the JCS to pretend to respect this guy.

There are plenty of hard working people in the military. If your personal behavior is a liability, there are others ready and eager to step in your place. Everyone reports to someone and those people have enough to deal with without your personal drama causing more issues for therm.

PP here. I DO agree with the military rules as regards not having affairs and not committing adultery. I think those behaviors are wrong and immoral. I also think there are military leaders who get to keep their positions and retirements. Maybe they're better at hiding their transgressions.

DP. Are you unfamiliar with the military? They actually have rules about all of this stuff - the Secretary of Defense should know about them and follow them, right?

The only time I’ve seen a service member punished for an affair under UCMJ was if the affair partner was another service member’s spouse (makes for some hard feelings at work!) or if the affair partner was also a service member and it was fraternization, or if the affair comprised their duty/mission/security.

A National Gaurd solider having an affair with a civilian is unlikely to be prosecuted, which is exactly why he wasn’t.

They don’t necessarily get punished under UCMJ, but they do get sidelined. And the stigma that comes with making bad decisions follows them professionally. It’s going to require some serious acting skills for the JCS to pretend to respect this guy.

Oh, please. Absolutely no doubt plenty of these people have their own skeletons.

According to many DCUM posters, affairs and babies born to single mothers are no big deal.

For the millionth time, there are actually rules about this in the military. And consequences. I get that only 1% serve, but the fact that the military has different rules than the rest of the population is pretty elementary.

Spare me. Plenty of higher up military officers engage in affairs.

Maybe that's the excuse your father or husband told you, but it's not an excuse to have an affair.

I'm not morally against infidelity. I don't care who people sleep with, as long as I don't have to watch or clean up after, but being a serial cheater shows some really poor impulse control, and probably a lack of empathy for your wives and kids. Do you think it's easy for those children? What kind of man is so weak he'd do that to kids?

No one has said that they don’t. We said they get passed over for leadership positions or lose them if people find out.

If you can’t control yourself and live by rules and commitments, why should people trust you and look up to you as a leader when their lives depend on your decisions?

There are plenty of hard working people in the military. If your personal behavior is a liability, there are others ready and eager to step in your place. Everyone reports to someone and those people have enough to deal with without your personal drama causing more issues for therm.

Exactly this. But Hedgseth’s case is a lot more serious than mere cheating. The SA charge in Monterey Bay involved the police, payouts and an NDA. He would never pass top level security clearance in normal circumstances. Plus the army suspects him of being a white nationalist bc of his tattoos. That’s why he was removed from service in Washington
