Yup. Most people will get it. BUT that’s not a reason to panic.

Good read.

Not panicking per se, but I am starting to think that it is very likely that my parents will not survive the year. They are elderly, and one is diabetic and the other asthmatic. I am also feeling pretty nervous about healthcare for other emergency conditions if large numbers are hospitalized. We really rely on the fact that we can get into ERs and hospitals when we need it for other conditions.

Most of the people who are dying from this are elderly with preexisting health conditions. But, remember, that most of the elderly people with preexisting health conditions who contract this virus are also recovering from it. It is far from a certain death sentence.

+1

My elderly relatives are at risk of becoming seriously ill with this...or the flu or any of the other circulating nasties. It’s not likely they will die from it just like it’s not likely they will die from the others. But there is a chance for all. They could also get hit by a bus for that matter.

Someone should explain to Trump that this virus will preferentially kill his voter base: older males.

Given the demographics of Congress, maybe they will expedite funding.

Or maybe pass some kind of healthcare reform so fewer people would be at risk.

I actually prefer this map. https://infographics.channelnewsasia.com/covid-19/map.html

CNA's infographics are the best. The ones they have done for case breakdowns and cluster for Singapore are far superior to anything else out there in term of public information. Our CDC could really learn from them, as could all the other health authorities.

You do realize that NIH, CDC, FDA, and the State Department are all a part of "our government"? Right? They are doing their jobs and monitoring, reviewing etc.

Any unrelated to the ship? If not, its kind of irrelevant.

Yes 2 in California

BNO is saying all are related to the Diamond Princess. Agree those cases, and cases among the Wuhan evacuees, are quite separable from the other US cases.

Their source is this page from the CDC site, which does not even care to point out how many new cases and which group they are from.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-in-us.html

More than ever, CDC needs to contact the CNA infographics guy.

I know when my daughter was in preschool and elementary school, she picked up all kinds of flus and colds that were going around. Before someone beats me up about it, I know COVID19 is not a cold. But could young children have some kind of immunity because they had another endemic coronavirus exposure recently enough that their immune system recognizes what antibodies to use against COVID19? So all those things kids catch may have given them some cross immunity to this? And older people being more removed from that kind of exposure have no immunity? Maybe parents of younger children will fare better since they probably caught whatever bug their kids brought home.
Not as scientist. I just play one online.

I think kids are more blessed.

Fewer kids are smokers.

If it becomes widespread here, I wonder if we'll see a difference among young people who vape and those who don't.

Smoke, vape, etc. the virus is not going to care. Ppl can succumb for many reasons.

Anything that weakens the respiratory system ups the ante for negative effects from this virus. There is a reason why middle aged smokers are getting hit harder by this than middle aged nonsmokers.

Quite sure my parents in their late 70s and late 80s with severe heart conditions won't make it. Same for my 90 year old inlaws. Hope our family of 5 all survive, which is far from certain.

Don’t you hate people who say things like that ? You could die tomorrow crossing the the street. Or choke on a hamburger. It’s so dismissive and stupid.

Yes, you could die those ways as well. All reasons not to get freaked out by it.

How many people are going to die in grocery store parking lots trying to stock up on supplies?

How many cases does Vietnam have? I’m the poster who took my kid off the bus because I thought his seat mates were in China. I kept him off for a month and just put him back on and they told him they were in Vietnam for a couple weeks and just got back. Kids from his class ride the same bus so I guess it doesn’t matter anyway.

Vietnam has reported 16 confirmed cases and states that 15 have recovered.

Vietnam, together with Indonesia and Cambodia, have been singled out by some researchers for having far fewer than expected cases based on the flight travel patterns out of China. In other words, they believe there is a large degree of under-reporting.

Especially questionable is zero cases for Indonesia.

Great. I guess he’ll be off the bus again.
