DCPS students shafted again - sign petition to keep Jelleff field public

I'm a parent of a Hardy 6th grader, but a resident of Ward 3. I just sent Mary Cheh an e-mail about this, and she responded very quickly:

"I’m looking into how we can rescind this deal and if not how we can get better use for Hardy and the community.
Thanks for your note
Mary"

Yes, it's important that Cheh be on the record about this. Just because Jelleff is in Ward 2 does not give her a free pass to be silent. Many of the children of her constituents attend Ward 3 elementary schools that feed to Hardy and use the aftercare at the BGC.

Simple. Maret gets it after 8pm.

If people are contacting their councilmembers outside of Ward 2, they should remember to point out that Hardy students come from all over the city, and are racially and socio-economically diverse.

The narrative that needs to be pointed out here is that a rich, predominantly white private school is using its political connections to the disadvantage of a racially diverse public school.

But I mean doesn't Maret take students from all over Upper Northwest and Chevy Chase Md and offer scholarships to a couple students a year?

I really think the mayor should take notice. The fact that this effort has continued to gain momentum through a long holiday weekend says that people care. In my 30 years living in DC a holiday weekend (with an impending hurricane to boot!) would almost always make everyone take their eye off the ball.

Thank you for sharing that, comrade.

Generally speaking, this type of situation is common in communist systems. Lack of transparency means that those with the right connections get a disproportionate share of public goods.

I don't begrudge the wealth of the Maret student body. I do have a problem with them using that wealth and connections to unfairly get control of a scarce public resource.

How are we going to stop Hardy from taking it over?

Have DPR do it's job and manage the scheduling. It's a large field. More than one group can typically use it at the same time (except perhaps during baseball/softball). And while my children attend Hardy, I'd want to priority to go to the aftercare kids.

Hardy is one party asking to share the space.

But you know that.

I think you are forgetting the children in the aftercare at Jelleff Rec Center. IMO they have an even greater need for and claim to the space.

The field is already rented at all other hours, including weekday evenings, to other groups who have paid for the privilege. No way is Maret going to give up its secondary afterschool field without a fight.

What kind of fight? Not sure how can they win against strong opposition. Nobody but Maret parents, Jack Evans and one DPR official thinks this is a good plan. They can put up a fight but I am not sure they can win.
