Wow, that’s creepy.

Nothing changed. The most likely way a suburban kid will die in america is by car. Has been that was for decades and cars are only getting more dangerous

And we still don’t have speed bumps on that road?

Wow, that’s creepy.

"Amar Desai, a friend of the driver, said the 17-year-old got the BMW as a gift from his parents about two months ago." Deja Vu.

Oakton parents still haven't learned the lesson....Shame on them!

Nothing wrong with giving a kid a car, whichever brand it is, as long as they were taught to be responsible human beings.

It’s so creepy the accident happened on the same section of Blake ln, in the same direction. Something should be done there, maybe a speed camera? I saw a cop car sitting at Blake ln park and a new speed sign around that area, but we need them on this end too.

Is this something being worked on? I looked up VDOT and it seems it has to be done through a homeowners association or neighborhood request. I don’t live in the immediate neighborhood but not too far. If you live there and need help getting started, if it’s not already in the works, there are plenty who can help you.

I live in the area and have been part of community meetings with VDOT over the years regarding this stretch of road. Speed bumps aren’t happening. Something needs to be done, but the VDOT engineers have been reluctant to do anything of substance. All they want to do is put up more signs. Palchik says she is making safety improvements a priority. Time will tell.

I have a friend there who has been very active in trying to get something done for years now, and it's basically what the PP said. In order to get there to be any speed control, the speed limit has to be lowered to 25. There is essentially no will to do that.

I wonder if Montgomery County has it correct with street trees on all of their roads rather than the VDOT 2' strip. At least the sidewalks then are further away and you are more likely to hit a tree or light pole than a pedestrian.
Anonymous
And that island could be widened with trees and the lanes reduced in size I bet.
Anonymous
Or narrow lanes and add a parking lane? Another possibility.

speed camera?

Congrats on regularly speeding near a school.

+1000

I hope the PP thinks twice before doing it again. Just because others do it doesn’t make it right. Goodness gracious.

NP here - are you familiar with Blake Lane? It's a 4-lane divided road - it's one of those places where it "feels" like the speed limit should be 45. And the school is nearby, not directly on Blake Lane. Please note - NONE of this excuses the reckless driving, but just pointing out - if you didn't know the school, you probably wouldn't know it was nearby.

NP -- Very familiar with this area. People don't get to decide what they feel the speed limit should be. There are a lot of people in the area walking to school, to the 7-11, to residences. Also many who use buses waiting at the bus stops. They tend to be less affluent and don't all have cars. This should be a reminder to us all to be more careful, drivers and pedestrians.

I saw a post on this in Vienna Foodies - weird place to discuss a car crash/deaths - and everyone just HAD to say they live close by or drive by there every day and just “SO SAD”. This has to have a term - whats it called when people have to obsess over tragedy and throw in their two cents/claim to knowing the exact intersection or connection to the death? Like congrats your daughter goes to Oakton, we absolutely needed that input.

In this case type of car matters...I guess you've never driven a BMW...

A Corolla goes from 0-60mph in 7+ seconds (a new one). A BMW goes 0-60mph in 2 seconds.

Vienna Foodies does a lot of fundraising/charity in the community, so it’s not weird to have the GoFundMe’s and other info on how to help posted there. They are also collecting grocery/restaurant gift cards for the families. But yes, the need to establish some kind of personal connection or proximity when you don’t know these families is weird and not normal.
