Meren is such a drama queen. "I have further questions, but I will wait for now, <dramatic pause> because I am still recovering from the emotion from it all." She is nothing more than a wanna be tik-tok influencer born too late so she is trying it for the cameras and on Facebook.

Maybe but she is one of the few to challenge Reid. The majority just go along with whatever Reid wants.

I'm sure she's frustrated for consistently being one of only a handful that appear to do any preparatory work or enforce any sort of rigor in the SB process.
Meren and Dr. Anderson do research and come prepared with data and questions. Many of the others vote in a block, mostly to appease Reid rather than meet community needs.
Meren proposed an amendment to put a timeline in place for posting the meeting materials and topics in advance to support better communication and community engagement and her school board colleagues voted against it. If you haven't been watching, start paying attention. Much of this board is a disgrace and their constituents should demand better.

Seriously, the nerve of some of these SB members (except Meren) to walk in and admit they are ignorant to the going ons regarding Western is just another example of their incompetence. They didn’t even take the time to ask meaningful questions. Meren is right to ask…What is the cost for generating another scenario and continuing to delay? What information do these folks need that they don’t already have after a year long process. Seriously they need to get their shi* together or resign immediately.

I don’t want my School Board representative spending more time on Skyview than the schools in her own district.

Then they shouldn’t vote on it.

Sounds like barely enough to open, but School Board members are going to get slammed over this mess next year.

Only two things can happen:

1. Skyview will have to cut back even further on what it can offer to such a small group of students; or

2. The overhead and cost per student at Skyview will be through the roof compared to other high schools.

This Superintendent and School Board have made such a mess of FCPS.

And this is 800 students that they've enlisted as they've been recruiting from the whole county. This is not kids opting in from only the 5 local high schools.

They had 650 from the 5 local schools, 400 of those were 9th graders. They will have zero issues getting larger classes once the boundaries are set. I am impressed that they have the numbers that they do given that it is going to start with no sports, smaller things like ban and marching band, and fewer electives due to the student body size. If anything, I think the fact that 400 9th graders opted in fromt he 5 local schools is amazing.

I think that you are wrong about that. We are at Carson. My kid is an 8th grader who opted in in AAP. He has had several classes where the teacher polled the kids, about half the kids in each of his classes said they were going to Skyview. I have no doubt that they were reaching out to kids who applied to TJ and were waitlisted or declined, they may have decided to not opt in because they thought they were going to TJ. The main group of kids who he knew who were not opting in were kids headed to Oakton.

The 9th grade gatherings have been very, very full at Skyview. The 10th grade is smaller but the 800 number if larger then the one I heard at the last Skyview meeting, which was 650.

No legal basis.

If they put a stadium in my backyard, I'd be suing for nuisance

Carson was there first. But, a stadium is not an everyday thing. I'm sure the neighbors take advantage of the fields, too.

You "come to the nuisance" when you buy a property adjacent to a school.

Good to know. Navy kids won't be assigned to skyview anyways. So, it understandable that they don't want to go to skyview.

True but middle schools don't have stadiums and sport complexes. I'm at Oakton almost every night and it's packed with kids doing soccer, baseball, flag football, marching band etc under all the lights. You didn't sign up for that if you bought next to a middle school.

She held back the first time she mentioned it in her opening comments. One of the board members (Andersen I think) went back at her for clarification, and Reid clearly said then that ES changes were off the table in the next iteration of maps.

Reid clarified that ES boundary changes are off the table, but they will still address feeder issues dealing with the elementary schools.

Yes those were her words in the opening comments, but then when board members went back to clarify she seemed to correct herself in that ES changes were off the table in their entirety. Hoping I'm not wrong...

I believe you are. When I listened Reid was very clear that they were not going to make boundary changes to the elementary schools but that feeder changes were necessary. I didn't hear her go back and change that at any point. Please drop a link to the timestamp where you think that happened.

It’s so gross. Skyview teachers should not be cold-calling any parents like that. Are they getting paid a commission by Reid?

They should be happy it’s not a data center.

Agree. It would be idiotic to leave Oak Hill going to Franklin and then on to Skyview by themselves, and same if Crossfield stays at Oakton then it would be idiotic for them to stay at Carson instead of taking Oak Hill's place at Franklin. Every school put in the Skyview pyramid should go to Carson for middle school.

Reid's first comments were at roughly 22:12 ("however we do need to address the elementary feeder patter")
Her response to Andersen's question is at 24:00 which sounded like "yes, ES is on hold"
McElveen at 30:40 echoed what he heard that Reid said the changes will be limited to MS and HS

The superintendent’s staff ought to work with the School Board members representing the district(s) most affected to come up with something sensible others can support. What we don’t need is every member acting like it affects them equally because the process is so screwed up that they feel like they have to get involved to salvage FCPS’s reputation.

I wouldn’t be shocked if they still touched some elementary boundaries. They should be avoiding splitting elem schools up as much as possible.

The Reps don’t want to lose students from their current schools, no one would move.

I would like an investigation and report on the reports that Skyview teachers are selectively calling students encouraging them to opt in to Skyview.

If they are only calling kids on the TJ waitlist after the School Board said they want a community high school, I went to know how that happened and what message Reid thinks that sends to Westfield and South Lakes families with kids who didn’t apply to TJ.

I don’t necessarily credit what’s been reported here because it’s very clear there are Carson families who want to encourage AAP kids to opt in and discourage others. But it seems there should be an investigation with transparency. If Reid is encouraging teachers to act in a manner contrary to the School Board’s express direction, she needs to be fired.
