This is a great question! You would think that they would be asked not to participate until the investigation is complete. In fairness, all football players that were not in the hayfield district last school year should not be allowed to participate in any sport until he externally investigated is complete.

Several of the "transfers" just took basketball roster spots from returning hayfield players. Basketball teams are small. It seems unfair this is being allowd to happen when VHSL and FCPS determined the players were recruited in violation of the rules--and VHSL also pointed out fcps residency checks were not done correctly.

Sounds like VHSL is going to have to step in again. This principal is just flipping the bird to everyone, including families inside his own school.

Hayfield BB beat Woodbridge by 46 points last night. However, I only recognize one name as a football transfer. Hayfield was already a powerhouse in BB.

If he dropped all the talent collection he would be able to prove it to everyone. Currently all anyone sees is an all star team put together from youth football. Hayfield was a great opportunity for him because they do have some talent there. If he would have been patient and worked with what was in the building he could have built a consistent Region title contender and if the stars align a state championship. He had no willingness to try that path.

Yeah, you're wrong. He's never proven he can coach. His offensive play calling is pedestrian at best. Also, no one sees an all-star team put together from youth football. They see a collection of illegally recruited players, many of whom he'd never coached before, brought to Hayfield, in many cases possibly so by violating the law. Your last sentence is right though, so there is that. Sweet comment man.

You can’t believe what you just typed can you. How can a person with “pedestrian” as you call it playcallling avg over 45 a game. Then you say they are first year players from wherever that he’s brought in, so again he can do this with KIDS that’s he’s nvr coached before being them all together, put in whatever calls he’s going to use and be able to get the production he’s gotten. Make it make sense. Your football accumen is clearly lacking so please just stop. You must of been one of the coaches that’s been beaten by over 40, lol

Overton’s offense isn’t complicated at all. He runs 2 or 3 base sets and only runs a couple plays out of those sets. It’s honestly very predictable. Screens, draws, play action, snags, posts, slants… The kids execute really well, probably because they have run it for years by now.

You’re wasting your time responding to posters that have no knowledge of sports. They believe a good coach can take a team with no talent and compete for a state championship. In reality, any good coach who has ambitions of being recognized for his/her coaching ability won’t take a job where there is no talent, unless that’s the only job they can get, and even then they won’t stay their long.

If it’s not broke, why fix it?

Hayfield has historically had good winter sports programs, namely boys basketball and wrestling. Multiple region and state championships between those two programs.

It makes you wonder why someone would feel the need to bring in 30 recruits from outside of the building when very good athletes already exist within their boundaries. Unless, you are cheating, your ego is too big, you are lazy or are not a very good coach. Things that make to go…..🤔🤔🤔

There shouldn't be even one "football transfer" taking basketball team spots away from Hayfield players. They were found in violation of VHSL recruiting/transfer rules!

Where is the roster posted?

My son says there are at least two non-Hayfield players on the Hayfield Varsity roster and the rumor is that one of them is one of the "homeless" players.

I would assume since the basketball coach at Hayfield isn't getting paid by these players to train them on the side he has no incentive to take any of these players unless they are legitimately better than everyone else who tried out, in which case he has all the incentive in the world if he likes winning as much as the Hayfield administration/Monty Fritts does (or did?).

And theoretically these players weren't proselytized for basketball so I'm no sure what VHSL will say.

It's amazing if you go find old Inside NOVA articles on Overton they are literally about his recruiting efforts (theoretically within his boundaries) at Freedom.

If this roster is correct, there are multiple illegal football transfers taking Varsity basketball roster spots away from Hayfield kids.

Initials: V.O., T.W., C.P. all transferred specifically for football. There may be more, those three just jumped out at me. Three spots on a Varsity roster is a LOT when a team is usually only 12 players.

That's right! Guilty until proven innocent!

That’s what it was for the playoffs.

No, that decision affected the team/program, not individual players.

They were proselytized to play a school sport. They should not be allowed to transfer in and take spots away from Hayfield kids in ANY sport. Its not fair to import 30+ all star athletes AGAINST VHSL RULES who then are allowed to take opportunities away from Hayfield kids.

Its really, really hard for regular kids to work their way up through freshman, JV and on to Varsity at large FCPS publics without having to fight for the few roster spots from illegally recruited transfer athletes.

Illegally recruited players are now on the freshman, JV and Varsity basketball rosters, taking opportunities away from Hayfield players.

If my kid was cut from the basketball team to make room for one of these transfers, I would be pretty pissed. Even if they are better at basketball, who cares? The school teams are for Hayfield students and the VHSL already stated the kids were recruited, which is banned.
