Unmotivated kids probably aren't applying. Somewhat motivated, above average kids are. If kids are no longer getting credit for pushing themselves in higher level classes or pursuing excellence in STEM extracurriculars, that leaves the door open for kids who aren't really pushing themselves at all or doing much of anything to get accepted. |
To be eligible to apply, students have to take honors-level classes if offered at their school. For math, science, social studies, ELA. https://www.fcps.edu/registration/thomas-jefferson-admissions/eligibility-requirements |
They need to take all honors-level courses, algebra 1+, and have 3.5+ GPA. That’s something. |
^. It’s not much. Around 40% of the kids in FCPS would meet this very low bar.
Also, they don’t need all Honors. They need 3/4 of the core classes to be Honors. |
Maybe they’ll be able to field a football team again that doesn’t just schedule games with Lewis and the Sisters of Mercy. |
Yes. That's the purpose of the school. To be average like everyone else. |
The football team did well this year. |
Some will be playing football in college. |
Back to reality: will FCPS appeal the opinion? |
They can never waste too much taxpayer money, so the answer has to be yes. |
"The other big reason why this case might set an important precedent is that it involves a “diversity” or “affirmative action” plan where the principal victims are Asian-Americans. Disproportionate effects on Asian-Americans have come up in other cases, most notably the currently ongoing litigation against Harvard’s affirmative action policies. But none of them involve targeting of Asian-Americans as blatant or as large-scale as in this case. And none involve a situation where it is so clear that the primary beneficiaries of the new policy will be whites, even though officials clearly also want to increase the percentage of African-Americans and Hispanics."

Maybe, maybe not. I don't think the facts support the judge's Order. |
The opinion was fairly airtight. Admissions changes were racially motivated. The board made that fairly obvious from the onset. It just shows that we still have problems with racism in this country. |
Football team has been doing pretty well ever since going to an independent schedule. Numbers are up, injuries are down, and kids are having a good time - and the games are competitive. With rare exceptions, it's not like they're going out and crushing people. |
The primary beneficiaries won't be white students unless they actually start applying to the school in greater numbers. They had a much smaller uptick in the class of 2025 than Black and Hispanic students did. |
