Prob a bunch of ppl with symptoms hoping it goes away so they dont have any hassle. Do you walk the other way when someone has a coughing or sneezing fit?

About quick serve restaurants, don’t you love seeing ppl lean into the food area to go over the safety glass. And why do some grocercery stores not bag the bread. The last thing I want is to grab a bagel or a loaf from where a person that is mildly ill or I’ll stuck their hands and head in.

Or I’ll have stuck their hands and head in. The autocorrect made it weird

Ill not I’ll

What about a crowded gym?

I think about this every time I go to the gym. I will keep going until they shut down the schools.

Even China is still to catch up with Hubei Province. The virus is way less present then Hubei.
Cases for individual Chinese provinces reported: 2020-02-21 T10:13:09
When you look at the numbers Hubei is unparallelly to any other province. I am not an expert on Chinese geography but I would assume a province or a large city is a huge population unit and most of them have under 1000 cases if not less.

Hubei
62662

Guangdong
1333

Henan
1267

Zhejiang
1203

Hunan
1011

Keep in mind, China took extreme measures to keep the spread in these cities slow. Remember? Some of the cities are on almost total lockdown. Everything closed. One person from each household may leave the domicile every 3 days to get groceries. Most businesses shut down. All schools and universities closed.

Yet they still let people to fly out of China to other countries. So if all is on lodk down who is flying amd why?

The US military in Vicenza, Italy is closing schools and taking other steps.

There are no cases in Vicenza but it is located in the Veneto region where a number of cases have been found.

"As a precautionary measure USAG Italy will close all Vicenza Military Community (VMC) DODEA schools and activities, CDC, and CYS activities, fitness centers on Ederle and Del Din, AAFES post theater and chapel worship services from Monday through Wednesday, Feb 24-26," Col. Daniel J. Vogel, USAG Italy Garrison Commander, said in a release.

Russia doesn’t have any capacity to deal with the virus. They don’t have basic equipment, personnel, training and tests.
We’ll find out it’s there when people start dying in large numbers.

I thought the US would be on top of this. But now it’s clear we are way behind, with barely any testing capacity.

I don’t know if incompetence or politics is the problem, but it surprising and alarming.

It's a huge political problem. Under the Obama administration, I thought our CDC was top notch. They handled the Swine Flu pandemic brilliantly, capably, competently. Their messaging and preparedness were exactly as they should be. Fortunately the Swine Flu H1N1 virus turned out to be quite mild but no one knew that at the start. And there were many more fatalities than for usual flu, especially among children.

I am so, so concerned that the Trump administration and the CDC under it is not up to this task. Not to mention that to deal with a pandemic, it requires a great deal of trust in the authorities and cooperation among different parts of the government. Things that are in super short supply right now.

I think the testing done in other countries targets people who are already symptomatic or rather far along in the illness. The symptoms are very general and apply to many things. By the time it shows in the lungs it’s incubated for quite awhile. But countries are trying to avoid mass panic. So they say they have a “test”.

No, it will just get deleted or moved back here to the health forum.

No one on the political thread wants to think about a pandemic. They are busy thinking about the election.

Forwarded from retired scientist who is creating his own emergent disease newsletter update for his friends:

Please see attached. The news is mixed. The epidemic is leveling off in China, but is still increasing elsewhere, but at orders of magnitude levels lower than in China. The anti-malaria drug has show promise in clinical trials in China (see https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/bst/advpub/0/advpub_2020.01047/_article). Best wishes, John

If they are concerned with the political aspects of this situation it should be on the political forum.

In most provinces of China, there isn't a total "lockdown" in the sense of a prison lockdown. I don't know what we would call it. "Everyone stay home as much as possible?" maybe?

Schools are closed and all but essential businesses are closed. Receration is shut down; malls are closed, meeting areas are closed; athletic games are cancelled.

Most people live in apartment buildings and neighborhoods where all but one entrance is closed off. No one but officially registered residents are allowed into the building, or the neighborhood. In some cases, people are very limited in how many times a day or a week they can leave the apartment. Maybe one person may leave, every three days. Or in some provinces less heavily affected, people may leave to go to work and come back. But if they don't get home by a certain curfew they aren't allowed back in -- this discourages them from staying out late, hangout out with friends.

People may leave the city or town with permission of their neighborhood leader. I don't think there are restrictions against flying somewhere but there are going to be quarantines at the other end of their flight I assume.
