Or if the stores will be open or stocked. Will people still go to work?

This could quickly become an economic crisis here...

Right?

They aren't doing random screenings; they are testing contacts of those already ill (sports team, friends, family members, colleagues) so it makes sense they'd have a lot of positives.

If the same team of people walk with those thermometers and touching their heads and carry virus from one person to another.. boy, their cases will mushroom and fast.

But then again. If we have 80K cases of flue out of which so many developed pneumonia and required hospitalization and our country could handled that then why do you think we could not handle this in theory? Especially when you deal with the flu, kids get sick, but this seems to be leaving kids alone. Also who knows, perhaps in China it is that the people smoke more and perhaps guys get it worse because female are protected by hormones. Besides, do look at the rest of the China cases outside of Hubei, it is not anywhere NEAR the same situation. The other provinces have anything from few cases to 1000 case per province and each of those are 50 to 100 million people.

Just try to imagine what the reaction would be if there were a cluster of cases in the DMV like there was in that S. Korean city. What would happen? Schools closed? Government offices close? Metro close?

I honestly don't know - but I'm going to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

We live paycheck to paycheck and just had a huge car expense. We only have enough money to buy groceries a week in advance. What should we do? I’m kinda nervous.

This is just not necessary. Even people in Wuhan are still able to order food and groceries for delivery and are allowed to visit the store as necessary. No need to hoard supplies with so few cases in this country right now. The likelihood of being unable to leave the house is just not in the realm of possibility right now.

I was trying to find some supportive data on this and can not. Only see the opposite. When you look on Tweeter there is nothing there or in any other media showing any deliveries happening. I would assume if that was the case we would all see them by now in all media. There is a talk that people can leave one person per household a day but the streets are being shown empty and stores closed so where are those people who are going out and where do they shop?
What is going in Italy or other places on lockdown? Who is providing supplies. Who supplies the people who are on self or imposed quarantine here in US? What if someone has no means to order delivery? Does the CDC help with this?

There’s lots on this on twitter - just not easily searchable as it’s videos not always captioned.

In China it’s varying by province. Highly doubt anyone can go out in Wuhan. In other provinces though - yeah there are rules about 1 household member going out every other day and they are ordering grocery stores to stay open. Eunice Yoon on CNBC discussed it — lives in Beijing and it sounds like the apt complexes are acting as local govt — IDK if that’s normal or if govt has told them to. Basically you have to go ask the building for a pass to go out at which time they check temps etc and also check when you last went; they are making it hard for people to leave as they don’t want ppl walking around and bringing it back into the building bc they just had to get their Starbucks (some Sbux are open apparently). There’s other videos of grocery stores prepping 100s and 100s of bags of orders and loading up an army of delivery guys on bike/moped and before each guy leaves the parking lot temps are recorded and put on a slip w the orders so I guess customers know he wasn’t feverish. Apt buildings though are getting reluctant about taking deliveries - prob bc their security guys don’t even want to touch the delivery guy/the bags. So theirs videos of 100s of bags being placed at the sidewalk of these buildings and then I guess you come outside and claim yours. And there are kinda cute videos of Chinese with soooo much time on their hands that they’ve made levers and pulleys with household goods — so I guess then a delivery guy calls up to say he’s there and you lower down your bin/bucket/platform and he unloads the goods and you hoist up.

In Italy - no idea I think the situation is far to new to know yet what’s happening on the ground.

In the US - there are hundreds of people under watch in each state and a recent article discussing it from Westchester NY said that each person is contacted by county public health every day and they discuss symptoms/temp; they just chat by video call to assess the persons mental health and offer any services that may be needed for that as people are getting anxious about health or depressed due to isolation; and then they’re asked about food/household needs and plans are made to get them those. In a place like Westchester, there’s online grocery delivery but in smaller places there isn’t so then the county makes sure goods get delivered to their doorstep bc last thing they want is someone who is obediently self quarantined suddenly going to Home Depot bc the only light bulb in their bathroom fused or to Target bc they ran out of feminine hygiene products.

Any more suggestions on what to stock up on? Food wise that is.
Also, besides Tylenol and Advil, what meds to stock up on?

You are arriving from the position of comfort. Imagine how many people has absolutely no knowledge what is going on with the virus. Ask few random people. Not everyone knows. Then you got sick people who have all kinds of conditions and do not leave the house, then you have people busy with kids and head full of other things. When you look at Italy, do you think it gave anyone time to prepare and plan? Not everyone plans and there will be always people caught by surprise and needing outside help.

I’m totally not faulting people in Italy or Iran — the damn thing hit out of nowhere and then things shutdown overnight; Iran esp went from 2 cases to one city in lockdown to like the entire country being under military guard. But for the US as we watch how fast these clusters come up, why not just grab a bit of food if you can afford to? I mean I live in an apt with minimal storage and even still I think having at least one of those Rubbermaid storage tubs stocked with pasta and rice and lentils isn’t a terrible idea. Yet IRL people I know are sitting at extremes — omg shut down the metro and we need 100% telework or it’s a cold right NBD? And that second - it’s a cold set - just seems willfully ignorant to me and no they aren’t super busy with infants or something to where they can’t watch 10 min of news coverage.

Meds - whatever you normally take, prescription or otherwise.

Food - doesn’t have to be non perishable bc this isn’t a storm but with perishables you’ll have to use them and replace so ppl tend to non perishables with this stuff. I’m thinking — pasta, rice, lentils, peanut butter, nuts, granola bars, oil/seasonings bc plain pasta would get old. But honestly what’s stopping you from getting some fun stuff too — favorite cookies or candy, tea, coffee, jam etc. Frozen veggies. Frozen meals if you eat those.

Household cleaners, soap — I expect you’d want to shower a lot.

O hilarity, people do not know what they eat and need? Rule number one, long shelf life. Rule number two, enough per person, Rule number three - variety, Rule number four go beyond basics so in case you really are stuck you don't get bananas eating pasta and rice for three weeks. Wine and Chocolate is a must, everything else, totally optional. .

In theory yes but probably wise to have some food that does not have to be cooked or refrigerated because if for some reason the electricity goes then what will you do. Chewing on dry raw pasta and sipping tomato sauce is only funny for the first few minutes.

If you have an extra 15 pounds on you, how long could you survive with only water?

Are you getting ready to "self-absorb"?

Men represent the majority of coronavirus cases so far. Researchers think smoking could play a role.

https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-cases-why-more-men-than-women-2020-2

Did anyone knows if female hormones that protect from certain heart problems during child bearing years might be a contributing survival factor since the coronavirus just like flu is very tough on internal organs and especially on heart?

Also, what about looking into the very simple difference of bathroom habits? Perhaps the way male use their urinals can cause something to sprinkle back at their parts and this could be a possible entry? That plus possible poor hygiene habits and not washing hands post factum?

P.S. Public bathroom is also a place where virus can be exchanged easier because so many people visit the place through the day and there is very little air exchange. Perhaps the fact that men are closer to each other while using facility as opposed to ladies who use the stalls can have something to do with the spreading?
