Private & Independent Schools
| Beauvoir parents: you might want to encourage the hiring of associate teachers who are parents reentering the workforce, hoping to enter into teaching. I got the feeling when I applied that I was rejected because I did not "fit the profile" of a recent college graduate. We older would-be teachers have a lot to contribute! |

I have to revert back to the supposed previous posting father of a Beauvoir kid who claims to know that the police were immediately called. My facts are exactly the opposite. I think I am right, but so do you probably. But your supposed facts are very different than anything I have heard, or any of the written communication received by me from the school.
The Cathedral policeman escorted the teacher from the property, not the "real" police. You can say the Cathedral police are real, but they are not from MPD nor should they have ever let him walk away. Just coincidentally the same guy who escorted the pedophile teacher off the property was just shot by Montgomery County Police a few weeks ago when the said Cathedral policeman shot his Beuavoir teacher ex girl friend. That is the man who escorted the teacher off the property -- before the DC MPD were called or knew a thing. This is what the head of the school has said to us. This is what the head of the cathedral police has said to us. I am a parent in the classroom. I have spoken to the police on the case. My understanding is the school CLEANED the room before it could be thoroughly investigated or looked at by the US Attorney's office and/or the police. The DC MPD did take other evidence but after the site had been cleaned up. So my facts directly contradict your facts. I know what I know, and I have not shared everything. There are kids involved, and their privacy should be protected. The most important thing is to find the teacher and (if found guilty), lock him up for a very, very long time. |
I am not a Beauvoir parent, so I do not have a dog in this hunt, so to speak. But, I do wonder - it is true the school should have "what if" procedures in place and everyone should act rationally and professionally. But, honestly, the school may have been in shock. How many people who find that loved ones have been killed in their homes do stupid stuff from an evidence perspective? I understand this is different, but I think we have to allow for people to be human. This was probably the most horrific thing imaginable for the staff who discovered it. You know, my daughter just started Kindergarten, and her school has these very detailed emergency plans for all sorts of scenarios. The info to parents lays out the entire step-by-step plan for each of the scenarios, including assuring us that the faculty has practiced "active shooter drills." (Boy, did I bawl when I read that.) But, honestly, if it really happens, I don't expect them to act like perfect robots. We will all second-guess them in hindsight. Please understand that I have deep empathy for the entire beauvoir community, especially those, like myself, who are parents of young children and the children themselves. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy, and I especially feel for you, PP, since your child was in that class with that creep. |
Exactly! Because older teachers couldnt possibly be pedophiles. Translation "Beavoir parents: Hire older teachers so I can get a job" |
| I did not mean to imply that older teachers couldn't be pedophiles. This is the only thread I've read that discussed the "associate teacher" position at Beauvoir, and it just seems strange and self-defeating for the school to categorically deny job opportunities on the basis of age. After a career in law and an undergraduate degree (from Princeton) in English and French literature, I thought on-the-job training such as that offered through an associate teacher position might be a great way to find out if I wanted to be a teacher. I'm no longer interested in Beauvoir, but thought that Beauvoir parents might want to know that the administration does not seem interested in a large pool of possibly talented, enthusiastic applicants. |

Hello I am a Current Beauvoir Parent,
I have attended many meetings and must say I have not heard anything about the school cleaning the room. If the school did this shouldn't the police have given them some type of consequence (is this not obstructing evidence). I am another parent who believes the school handled the situation in the BEST INTEREST OF STUDENTS. If adminsration would have allowed the teacher to stay on campus they would be getting flack for that. The school has been open and shared the information they have. According to the school they followed procedures established by the Cathedral police to handle the situation. The Close policy is to remove the predator from the campus around the children. This information was provided during a parent coffee held last week. It is also very unfair to bring the Police Officer and teacher that was shot into this situation. The school community especially the children are having a difficulty time dealing with this. It is unfair to infer that this man who is no longer walking on this earth had poor judgement. We do not have all the facts surrounding the shooting of the teacher or the police officer. Let them rest in peace!!!! Prospective Parents - My advice be tough with the school - ask questions about the incident. If you get the answers you want apply if not do not apply. But the most reliable information is going to come from the school not posters without an identity. I must say as a new parent I am pleased with the school's response, communication, and desire to rebuild the school community. They understand it is not going to be easy; but is necessary for the CHILDREN. |

Boy did you drink the kool aid at that coffee.
I'm happy that some people think the school handled the situation well because there are certainly insiders who think the other way. |
No, I didn't drink the Kool Aid at the Coffee I drank the coffee : ) Those insiders who think the school did not handle the situation correctly should approach the school about it. But I bet they won't, they will continue to post anonymously. Please do not mix up my words. I think the school did the best thing for the children. Remove the pig. Who knows how the teacher would have responded with deeper questioning - harming more children or even staff. I just like you want this person captured. Just curious - many of you are throwing stones at the school but why has no one questioned the actions of the authorities? Final Post - Enjoy the battle by yourselves. I am going to actively involve myself in the healing process at Beauvoir. Seems like we all are in need of healing. |

I dont know why I so often drawn into these posts because most of the comments are way off-base, uninformed and down right silly.
I'm a new Beauvoir parent and here are my thoughts. First, the school probably did make mistakes in the wake of the teacher incident. But who wouldnt. The school administration bills itself as expert in early childhood education and intellectual development, not crisis response, police response or investigations. The first reaction of a protector (which I expect from educators) is to think about the immediate well-being of the children, not the investigation of the case or prosecution. Thats why we have police and prosecutors. Second, why is there so little outrage towards the teacher. Among all the players, he's the one who broke faith with the school, the parents and the children. If the facts are true, he's a predator, liar, and depraved pedophile and IS the problem. The school did the appropriate background checks, monitored him and made a judgement call on his retention and promotion. It was the wrong call, but that happens all the time. Third, this group seems to be skirting an obvious but probably politically incorrect baseline assumption. From what I understand, some in the Beauvoir community either knew or assumed that the teacher was a homosexual. While I know its not PC to suggest this but the scandal might have been prevented if the school (as the Catholic Church should have) had been more circumspect in allowing a homosexual close contact with scores of young boys. I know its not a popular thought, but there are too many instances such as this one for us not to have an honest discussion. |
Oh puhlease -- then what we should really do is not let ANY men (heterosexual or homosexual) ever teach school because they are more likely to be sexual predators. The reality is that the majority of sexual predators are heterosexual men so we should keep them out of all positions of authority over children. BTW, it's against the law to discriminate against people on the basis of sexual orientation in the District of Columbia. This protects both heterosexuals and homosexuals. Georgetown University lost a discrimination suit which charged the IT department with favoring young good looking gay men over middle aged women. |
|
From Protecting the Gift, page 16:
"Nearly 100 percent of sexual abuse is committed by heterosexual males." |
| I knew my thoughts would spark controversy. In response, all I can say is that in both the Catholic Church scandal and this one at Beauvoir the comment thread was homosexual men. Obviously, it not legal to discriminate but certainly I would look sexual orientation as part of the assessment of whether a teacher is acceptable in a certain context. Similarly, I would be cautious about placing young heterosexual men in close contact with young girls. In both instances, i wouldnt discriminate but I believe that close scrutiny is warranted and appropriate. |
Goodness you are SOOOOO misinformed and backwards it's embarrassing! If you have kids and you think that your completely wrong ideas about who is likely to molest them will keep them safe, think again! You are so much more likely to put them in harms way by ignoring the true dangers and focusing on young gay guys who wouldn't want to touch your kids with a ten foot pole (NO PUN INTENDED.) Really, do yourself, your kids and everyone else a favor and actually do some research and find some FACTS. Almost all molesters are "straight" men but since their sexual orientation is to children (not other adult men - GET IT?) they will molest boys or girls - whichever is available. Contact the Center for Missing and Exploited Children and ask for some info. Sheesh! Signed, a straight mom who doesn't trust many people with her kids. |
| In response. I'm not misinformed maybe the PC crowd doesnt like to see the facts straight. If you have sex with a person of the same sex then you are a homosexual by definition. To your point, I agree we need to be vigilant on all fronts. |

Just curious... Were there any consequences at all for Paula Carreiro?
