College and University Discussion
I’m smarter than you drunk or sober

I know there are very generous automatic (?) merit scholarships at these southern flagships but all the kids we know who’ve gone down there are UMC and frankly rich. Wealthy, popular, sporty, social, excellent students and that whole carefree all-American vibe. Of course six-figures in free merit money is a nice but I don’t get the impression that’s fueling this. At least amongst the dozen or so kids we know. |

My SEC kid is having a blast with his undergrad experience. Great group of friends, gorgeous girlfriend, loving his classes.
I will say though, that he has decided to pursue finance and it’s starting to dawn on him that he is going to have to hustle much harder than his peers at Ivy “target schools” to break in. He may end up with a regional bank, but is confident that he will one day be where he wants to be by outworking everyone. I know he wonders about how his path might have been different being at an Ivy, but that was not an option. I think ten years from now he will not regret where he went and will remember his times fondly. |
You’re funny when you’re jealous

Are we not talking about out of state admission? And also, the top 6% rule is only helpful if you’re interested in the College of Liberal Arts; for CS and Business and engineering there’s an equal split between top 6% and non top 6% |
UT Austin OOS acceptance rate is 5%. Funny how the haters leave that out. |
Ivies are more affordable to our family (and a majority of American families) than our state flagship. Maybe don’t assume the financial profile of who you’re speaking to? |
Bullshit. Ivies are dominated by the top 1% |
If you’re a top student in Texas, you’re literally guaranteed to get into Both… |
lol nevermind. |
The good thing is our statements aren’t mutually exclusive! |
| SEC baddies will be so rich it will make the nerds blush |
Maybe you don’t understand math |
| Just a Texan here to emphasize that Texas is not the south- especially when your kid is going from New England just to go to the SF version of Texas that is Austin. If we were talking rice, I’d be more sympathetic, but there’s nothing southern about Austin. |
You think only the top 10% is good? You’re an idiot lol |
