Matty and Taylor

They’re about HER (and Matty) but I guess I’m not enough of a fan to find that interesting beyond a listen. Whereas I felt a personal connection to Folklore and Evermore. TTPS is too idiosyncratic, and not at all interesting. I don’t really care about her obsession with this guy, who clearly was not worthy; I’ve lived through my own relationships with guys like this in my 20s and it’s just…who cares.

-1. TTPD is her most vulnerable, genuine and creative lyricism yet and my favorite of all the albums!

Cowboy Like Me was an obvious reference as well. Matty famously gave a speech about being a cowboy when accepting the NME Innovation Award with his band in early 2020:

“Farmers like to cultivate their thing and keep it the same, and cowboys like to go out and find new pastures. There are so many wonderfully talented people in this room and I don’t have any advice because I’m really scared and I feel really small, but my only advice would be, be a cowboy.”

Speaking of the NME Awards, Taylor was there in February 2020 too and won Best Solo Act. There are videos online of Matty and Tay hugging at the show.

NMEs 2022 was particularly interesting. Matty’s ex Halsey received the same Innovation Award as The 1975 two years prior. Matty’s other ex FKA Twigs received the Godlike Genius Award and performed a medley of songs. Taylor received Best Reissue for Red (TV). And Jack Antonoff, a friend and producer for both TS and The 1975 received the Songwriter Award. Talk about same circles!

Agree this one is my favorite album by far. The lyrics speak to me in ways others haven’t…some parallels maybe.

A number of songs on Folklore and Evermore were clearly about Matty too though and had specific references to him, esp for fans of The 1975 who know tidbits about him. For example, he has a tattoo on the inside of his lip (ouch!) that he talked about back in 2015, so the lyric “I knew you’d linger like a tattoo kiss” was an obvious nod to him. In Maroon, she mentions getting drunk on his roommate’s rosé and hooking up.

Apparently Halsey, FKA Twigs and Taylor Swift did.
I think he was probably being honest in that speech. Matty’s stage persona is very different from who he is in real life (a sweetheart and hilarious). He is all confident, wild and free on stage.

He's also immature, narcissistic and an addict. He has addictive personality which means he love to get someone close and push them away because he can't handle the responsibility of loving someone other than himself.

We don’t know him well to pass judgement with such conviction. He is a *former* addict and only smokes pot occasionally now.

As for the immaturity & narcism, I don’t agree. Matty is very devoted to his band, and apparently one of the few musicians who shares all income with his bandmates evenly, even though he writes most of their songs and is the lead singer. He left Taylor last summer because he saw no sane, healthy way for them to be together. He knows how important fame is to her, and how important the band is to him. They were getting harassed daily.

And I love Taylor, but she is as immature and narcissistic as a 35-year old can be, so perhaps they would have been perfect for each other. At least Matty can read and think, unlike her current boyfriend.

I didn’t say with certainty, did I? It is highly unlikely that Matty can tour for 18 months straight at age 33-34 while using hard drugs. And his vocals are good + he dances and moves the entire time.

Pills are not hard drugs. Many people regularly take Xanax and other benzos, barbiturates, Ambien etc. Musicians in particular are fond of molly.

You never know. A lot of young people experiment with drugs. Definitely lots and lots of musicians do. Some relapse; many do not.

But you kind of did. Same way you declared that he left last summer, why he left last summer, what he was thinking, the conclusions he drew.
