Reality check here. Reston is not is not in far-away Loudoun County. It is not in far-away Prince William County. If you draw a circle on the map with a 10 mile radius from South Lakes HS, you cover a lot of the big feeder clubs in this area. My kid plays on a team that trains in two locations adjacent to Reston and all the kids are from Vienna, Fairfax, McLean & Ashburn. It's an easy drive. |
FCV will have the best talent in Virginia. So much talent that a lot of "top" kids will be left off already full rosters. FCV and Loudoun will try to keep those kids by labeling them "developmental players".....but those kids won't stay and will be starters at WS or VDA or Mclean...etc. I think both clubs are in for a surprise |
Loudoun is a "far away county"? |
It is to me in Arlington. |
Vienna to Reston is a pretty easy drive. Lots of back roads. Maybe Arlington's a stretch, but I always get beat down in this threads when I question why people would travel from Arlington to Loudoun or vice versa. "It's TRAVEL soccer, people! You need to travel!" |
I'm fine with it for weekend games. No way in hell would I subject myself to weeknight traffic for practices from Arlington. I work from home and I'd lose my mind if I had to sit in 1 hour of traffic each way...I have siblings in Loudoun and it does take that long at prime rush hour. |
Driving to Reston is easy with no traffick. Driving 4 times a week with tolls and nightmare traffick to make soccer practice because it is called "travel" soccer is exactly what is wrong with parents here. There are no good back roads to Reston from points in Fairfax and DC. WS can have all the leftovers who don't make FCV . . . their drive at least is doable. |
Posters are focusing on the geographic location of the Virginia DA. One day after the announcement there is still not mention of the partnership on Reston's website. Every other DA that was accepted have strong youth club programs as their foundation. How many of the Reston coaches have "A" licenses? I would suspect few since they don't post their credentials and they don't even field travel teams in some of the age groups that the DA will be competing in. I'm not trying to bash Reston's club because I'm sure the coaches and DOC have good intentions but they don't have the base that the DA could build on. There are too many high level clubs with great infrastructure and top level play to compete against and I don't think the appeal of the DA will be enough to pull from the other top level clubs. Although there is a distance for Washington Spirit admin the best landing spot for their DA would have been Richmond or Hampton Roads. |
That's because WS wanted to use the Clubs as a parasite. They wanted full control and to act independently from the Clubs. They wanted only their own trainers/coaches. I don't know what side I'm on because I have t been impressed with the boys DA at local clubs (outside of DC united)--they are just the same travel coaches I wasn't that impressed to begin with. I don't think the training is superior or "Academy-worthy". |
And doesn't Arlington have DA? |
It is up to WS to provide the coaches that meet the DA standards for the DA that they, not Reston were awarded. |
Then DA is simply not for you and your family. There will be several talented kids that decide that DA is not for them for a variety of reasons but the reality is, when something is limited it will not be convenient for everybody. |
Hopefully WS can start to detail out who the coaches will be for each team and their qualifications if they hope to get quality players. |
So any bets on who will be Spirit VA's technical director? Does Diane Drake leave McLean? Does Eddie Lima seize his chance to head up a program again? Does Terry Foley have a non-compete clause? It's been almost a year so it's about time for Ken Krieger to change jobs. Is Kephern back from Europe?
My bet, another Spirit coach takes the job that no one seems to want, for a DA that will be combined into the Spirit MD Academy in two years. |
Who cares? |
