Despite losing partner clubs in Virginia, Washington Spirit moving forward with Girls DA plans
Braddock Road, Arlington, Loudoun will not be partnering with the Spirit’s Virginia Development Academy program
by Caitlin Buckley@caitlinbuckley2 Feb 6, 2017, 9:28pm EST

The Washington Spirit lost three of the partner clubs for its Virginia-based U.S. Soccer Girls Development Academy program. Braddock Road Youth Club (BRYC), Loudoun Soccer, and Arlington Soccer Association will not partner with the Washington Spirit’s Development Academy in 2017. The planned partnership with Southwestern Youth Association (SYA) is uncertain.

Last July, the Spirit named those four clubs as partners when they announced the creation of a Virginia-based Girls Development Academy team. According to Washington Spirit President Chris Hummer, the partnerships were at that point a handshake deal, with all parties approving the press release announcing the partnership.

^^^Hummer says they are filling the Spirit DA team with top International players??? Huh? I guess because they couldn't find any US players/clubs in the area. Of course , International players for girls is the exact opposite of Intetnational players for boys. They can't throw that around and have everyone instantly drool. It doesn't have the same gravitas.

^^^^yeah what does that even mean??

Folks, can you just do an excerpt and a link? Caitlin's terrific -- let her get the page views.

Besides, it's the law.

So....what club in VA has the girls DA and their own facility and staff...and can operate independently on its own?

I think it's blatantly obvious VA girls don't want any part of the DA.

It is not a winning model on the girls' side.

Excellent read and I think it just as equally applies to the boys' side.

VA girls don't care what Club they play for...VA girls just want to play in the best league and ultimately be seen by college coaches. If ECNL is the best platform...kids will flock to those clubs....If DA is the best platform...kids will flock to those clubs...there is no loyalty between players, coaches, etc. The best thing a club can do is present the best platform and infrastructure...as they say...if you build it they will come.

also good (as a nation we have a skill problem; how colleges look for pure speed-not skill):

I have been watching this at every youth tryout in the area ...

I read the article when it first came out....and I agree with the writer. I am not a fan of the DA or USSF. A matter of fact, I think they are completely incompetent...and the rolling out of the GDA proves that. The ridiculous sub rules...double age groupings... just means less playing time....that's good for development...right?

#2: Girls (Parents) are not flocking to the DA in hopes of being "developed" or "making" the USWNT. They will go for two reason and two reason only..."Its the best league" and "Showcasing".

College soccer is the end all be all for girls....and its a BIG deal for them.

Any input on EDP and what types of teams currently participate versus more "local" leagues such as NCSL or CCL? Seems to be very independent especially with the geographical distance of teams/clubs. Are clubs putting in their top teams? If individual team focus, why would one team choose to participate in EDP?

EDP is very independent in this area. Some clubs use EDP as a supplemental league at U12 because there has been an 11v11 division. Some clubs will use this to prepare for that transition. Some clubs simply want to challenge their team against different opponents.

For this area, DMV, EDP is a little fast and loose but the Jersey and other mid Atlantic clubs that play in it are good clubs and teams and is their NPL.
