Do you care about $3k purses?

$50K is the median car price in 2025 FWIW

I have a couple of $3k purses and also several that are in the $200 range. I tend to grab whatever best suits my outfit. The expensive ones I bought because I liked them and could easily afford them - I didn’t save up for them, or go into debt for them, or forego savings or investments or otherwise sacrificing for them. They are not any better than the $200 purses, quality-wise, and I think most people probably wouldn’t clock that they are $3k or afford me any status because of them. I just bought them because I liked them, could afford them, and decided to treat myself. I think you're overthinking this, OP. It’s not that serious.

Nope. Not at all.

If she cared that she dropped a $3G bag, she's not a one percenter.

I wouldn't spend that/wouldn't be into it but I don't care if others do/just don't expect me to notice/be impressed.

Now jewelry or architecture- that's my thing and I appreciate and will pay for what I like.

Bags aren’t my thing but get the appeal.

I spend a lot going out to eat, probably more than some people think is reasonable. Many of us enjoy our little treats and creature comforts and, yes, sometimes that means splurging on something fun.

I would not care about her 3k purse. I'm perfectly content with my two Hermès Kelly purses.

It's normal to care about $50 dollar purse and $3000 purse if it gets dirty. She is rich and she still cares. I don't see a problem.
Why are you talking about her $3k purse that is like $50 purse to you. She can't win.

I am a multimillionaire but do not have expensive bags because I worry about ruining them. I do buy nice quality leather bags without logos.

I can afford them but can’t be bothered.

I prefer lightweight, non leather, large bags…Longchamps, MZ Wallace have been just fine.

The late Nora Ephron carried a Metrocard bag.

I have a few 2-3k bags that were gifts and sometimes I’ll show up to our private school with them but most of the time I show up with a canvas bag I got for free. Don’t care what other people are using as bags.

The purse is around $3k. I can’t make myself interested in an expensive purse and wondered if anyone felt the same?

I’m happy for my friend that she likes her purse. But I don’t value purses and barely notice what purses people use.

My friend and I are very different and I love that we respect each other. She grew up extremely wealthy, and she is my window into the one percent life…

Am I a weirdo for feeling this way? And should I be better at recognizing status symbols?

I mean, you could try being a little less smug, as it isn’t a good look.

And wouldn’t you be chuffed if someone gave YOU a $3k gift?

I always wanted fancy stuff and then when we “made it” I was over it (ironically). Anecdotally I do notice that you get treated much better by strangers though if you’re out in public wearing visible status signals. People seem less reluctant to f with you.

So they f with you more often? I don’t understand. How is that being treated better?

I wouldn't notice the difference between a $30 purse and a $3,000 purse. I don't care what other people do, if they have the money and want to spend it on a purse, good for them. For me, I would never - we could take a great long weekend trip for that money, enjoy ourselves and smile at the memories forever. But that would be my choice, to each their own
