Do you care about $3k purses?

No, I don't notice stuff like that on people. If someone has a bag they really like I'm happy for them, but I will not notice or be impressed. I'm as likely to compliment some $100 tote as I am some very expensive designer one.

There are a handful of purses I know about just from reading about them online and I do now sometimes notice. Like now I know what an Everfull is, I will spot it on other moms sometimes. I'm guessing the draw there is that they last a long time? I found the cost very jaw dropping when I heard. It's just coated canvas, right? That's wild to me. But if you like it, that's what matters.

No. It’s basic b territory

My husband wanted to buy me a $3k purse and I just didn't want it. Some people collect and value purses. I'm in to jewelry and would definitely accept a $3k item of that!!

Considering I buy my purses from the bargain table for about $20-$30, I’m going with I don’t care in the least.

The purse is around $3k. I can’t make myself interested in an expensive purse and wondered if anyone felt the same?

I’m happy for my friend that she likes her purse. But I don’t value purses and barely notice what purses people use.

My friend and I are very different and I love that we respect each other. She grew up extremely wealthy, and she is my window into the one percent life…

Am I a weirdo for feeling this way? And should I be better at recognizing status symbols?

I mean ... I'm not trying "to make myself interested" in anything. I like nice bags, for multiple reasons, but I do't care what other people carry, or even notice most of the time.

Sounds like you are simply feeling the need to engage in a bit of reverse-snobbery to feel superior. Not a great look.

No one cares but her. Afterall it’s her now wet $3k purse.

My theory is the amount people spend on their purses is a normal distribution (assuming wealth along the x axis and price along the y). Lower incomes can’t afford it; there is a point where people are “making it” where they are more likely to splurge on a status symbol, but at higher incomes many people don’t either because they are frugal (hence their wealth) or because at a certain point labels become gauche. Particularly for handbags, many of the most recognizable bags are just as likely to be (good) fakes. That said, I will spend on a bag I really want, but generally it has to do with shape/leather quality/detail and doesn’t have any branding on it. At a certain wealth level you splurge on what you value. My husband walks around dressed head to toe in target/hanes sweats and prison slides but drops a ton on his golf gear.

I like nice things including nice bags. I don’t know where are all these reportedly wealthy posters are IRL. If you go to a parent event at either of my kids’ private schools- practically all the moms have expensive bags on their arms.

At my private school the moms had Birkins or similar, not $3K Prada bags

I see Birkins, Chanels but also a variety of bags in the $2000-4000 range.

Are many of these $50 bag women using private schools?

I would never spend that much. I have one designer purse, a gift from my adult kids, and I still use it 15 years later.

DCUM's delusion that wealthy people all shop at Target and drive Hondas never ceases to amaze me.

I’d love to have 3K bag, I just don’t have that kind of money and 3000 other priorities that come before a bag.

Yes. Once you pay the private school tuition, not much is left for bags.
