We live in DC.

The in-state thing is possible if you have a grandparent in FL (yes, really). So we'd get DCTag money as well.

It would make UF cost about as much as a European vacation.

Major is CS

You need to apply and get the grandparent tuition and there is a very limited amount. Have you already secured this?

No DC TAG:
"Students that pay in-state tuition at their college or university are not eligible to receive DCTAG."
https://osse.dc.gov/publication/dctag-fast-facts-brochure

You're welcome!

It’s either/or. Either in-state tuition or DCTAG. But either way, UF is going to be less than half the cost of UVA.

Appears that 9 out of 10 posters agree with you that UF is the way to go.

This is an anonymous forum. They could all be the same person. It could also be a bunch of people who know nothing. Could be bots.

I would only choose UF because it is in state. Are these the only two options your DC has? I would never choose UF over UVA under any other circumstance.

UF would obviously be far less expensive - instate tuition <$10k.

UVA is well-respected, especially in the mid-atlantic. While UF is a pretty highly ranked public, I'm just not sure. Looking for opinions...

UVA is more than 70k. Add the Florida in-state tuition to the 70k and you have what it costs — 80k, or more depending on major. But you would know that if DC was actually choosing between these schools.

With DCTag and the major choice, it's around 70. Nice attitude, though. You seem a little jealous.

It's 90, and 80 with DC tag for CS, which is part of Engineering and higher tuition and fees. Not jealous of people who can't read:

BACS is 10k less than a BSCS.

We aren’t talking about UVA vs Princeton, these are two almost identical schools. Similar “preppy southern” vibes at both too

Exactly! 1000% go to Florida! Honestly, I think a lot of people in the north is finally realizing and/or admitting that UF is a specular school- great education, great price ( for in state and out of state - though definitely cheap for in state), and very prestigious. Every year, the school gets more competitive. Also, if you got into Honor's even better. But even without Honors, it is definitely worth it

I disagree, its reputation has started to decline since Sasse was named president.

I know that there are posters here who are overly hostile toward Red State schools, but the problem with Florida is that Florida is really at war with its state universities. Faculty members posting on message boards sound really angry and demoralized.

I’d want to tour UF and talk to faculty members in private about what they think before I chose it over UVa.

And maybe I’d rather go to an even more conservative, lower-ranked school that was at peace with its state.

Won’t happen in the next 10 years. UVA is the more impressive degree and excellent recruitment.
If money is no factor, UVA.

UVA is about to fall out of the top 5 publics. Guess which school is #6?

The one that used to be #5 and fell to #6.

This was my question too, and it doesn't look like the OP has come back to answer it. I'm from Florida and my parents still live there so we looked into this and it is very limited. If memory serves the state allocates somewhere around 300 total per year and that is divided between all their state schools.

That's exactly right - first come first serve. However, if you get waitlisted for the waiver, you might get it after May (when OOS students make the decision to go to an OOS school).

This is the easiest choice in the history of DCUM. Florida.

Pp and this was also my understanding. The successful applications are filed way back in the fall but it is near impossible to get due to the small number.

On a related note, I am surprised no one has mentioned size. UF is nearly twice the size of UVA, at nearly 35,000 undergrads.

Except for the fact that Florida is a top 30 school and NEU is not.

Only because of the slant towards public schools in US News over the last few years. I agree with pp that UVA is a tier above UFL based on overall reputation, it has no grad schools of note.

That may be an issue - didn't even know about it until decisions came out last Friday, so it's not secured. UF was just a last minute addition to the application list, so wasn't really tracking the details closely.

Size is a consideration, but not really a problem.

As a hiring manager, I did not find UVA particularly impressive. Maybe it's a big deal in Virginia.

I'm an alum of UF and would not be "impressed" by the school, yet I would know from personal experience that the education is high quality.

I'd find Michigan impressive.

The one that used to be #5 moved to #4. The number #4 public moved to #5.
