UVA OOS vs UF in-state

What kind of basic skills?

UF would obviously be far less expensive - instate tuition <$10k.

UVA is well-respected, especially in the mid-atlantic. While UF is a pretty highly ranked public, I'm just not sure. Looking for opinions...

Depends on the major.. If Engineering or CS, it doesn't matter. UVA is not that highly ranked. If Business or other areas where UVA is highly ranked, def. go to UVA. While they are ranked closely on US News, UF is a tier below UVA (much like UVA is a tier below UMich/berkeley/UCLA for certain domains, especially STEM).

^^ pp again.. When DC was considering colleges a couple of years ago, UF (full ride), UVA and UMich were candidates. Four of our friends who are long-term tenured faculty at Florida universities advised us to not send DC to FL. They themselves had sent their kids to higher ranked schools (publics mostly) in other states despite having free rides at UF.

UF hands down. It has a solid reputation and you cannot beat FL in-state tuition. It’s also a fun place to spend 4 years. I’m a UF alum, and I’m sorry that PP didn’t like the school and I guess has had a bad experience with grads, but like any large school, you’ll probably find some variety in outcomes.

Kind of wild - strong opinions both ways on this.

UF all the way. I know a lot of Civil and Structural Engineers and also Building Construction Majors from UF.

The CS major I know is working for Netflix.

Understand it is very difficult to get into UF. It is hard for me to understand what basic skills the PP means.

Those ranking methods don't really tell the whole story.

If money is not an issue, I would choose UVA, otherwise, I'll stay at Florida.

100%. They have also invested a lot in their rankings that I wouldn't be surprised if they keep climbing -and they are already pretty high.

No not with Ben Sasse at the helm.

UVA OP Florida is not safe for college students. Unless of course you like Nazi lovers, racists, antisemities and idiots.

Crazy part is that out of state for Florida is about the same for in state UVA.

Just imagine how much better your kids life would be if you gave them that extra 240k for a downpayment instead of wasting it on a school that’s ranked almost the same.

We aren’t talking about UVA vs Princeton, these are two almost identical schools. Similar “preppy southern” vibes at both too

Exactly! 1000% go to Florida! Honestly, I think a lot of people in the north is finally realizing and/or admitting that UF is a specular school- great education, great price ( for in state and out of state - though definitely cheap for in state), and very prestigious. Every year, the school gets more competitive. Also, if you got into Honor's even better. But even without Honors, it is definitely worth it

UF is a degree mill, but at least the price is right.

We live in DC.

The in-state thing is possible if you have a grandparent in FL (yes, really). So we'd get DCTag money as well.

It would make UF cost about as much as a European vacation.

Major is CS

You need to apply and get the grandparent tuition and there is a very limited amount. Have you already secured this?
