2021 AAP Admissions Thread

I received the email today saying that my son was not accepted for level IV. He is currently in 5th grade at private school. We had a WISC V taken in December. He scored a 131. Can anyone recommend what would be the best test for an appeal? We went to GMU for the WISC V. Is there another alternative to GMU or should we stick with that?

IN from private.

1. 2nd grade (was in FCPS for 1st).
2. NNAT 142
3. GBRS unknown but assume high.
4. Eligible for level IV.

Our base school is a center.

There are still so many smart kids who have no money for private schools stay in FCPS!

Agreed. We considered private school as well but my child's 1st grade teacher encouraged us to stay with FCPS (or didn't see a need for him to go private). He got into AAP level 4 for next year.

132 on the NNAT or COGAT is normally the in pool score used by FCPS. A 131 WISC would probably mean that your child would not have been in-pool for FCPS based on the NNAT or COGAT, the tests are proxies for the WISC.

There really isn't another test that is seen as being equivalent to the WISC. You need to wait a certain number of years before you take the WISC again so I don't think you have another test option.

What was the quality of the samples and the commentary from the school committee on the GRBS though? I think that makes a HUGE difference as NNAT is found to be the least reliable of the assessments related to AAP success.

And yet numerous studies show that NNAT has a very high correlation with academic achievement more generally and with IQ... so if NNAT is "not reliable to assess AAP success," to me that is more of a reflection on how AAP is conducted than the test itself

I'm the PP whose kid scored 119. We parent referred only b/c the AART strongly encouraged it and took care of the work samples.

Your guess is as good as mine.

Just to be clear, I'm not necessarily saying that your child doesn't belong in AAP. I'm only saying that I don't believe it should simultaneously be true that your child belongs in it and a 140 NNAT child does not.

Don't disagree, which is why I'm one of the posters who's been mostly baffled by the intensity of feelings on this thread.

Some of you place too much emphasis on the NNAT score which is only a SNAPSHOT of a 1st grader 18 months ago... A NNAT score alone without a Cogat score doesn't show a trend of cognitive development. Also, 1st graders are not always the best test takers.

From my understanding, FCPS is very biased against students coming in from private. They don’t like families that are disloyal to FCPS, so they make it much harder for them.

I would agree. Certainly appeal but don't appeal solely based on the NNAT score. I would request the GBRS from the school that was submitted with your childs application as well. What about their report card, work samples? Carefully look at all data points...
