Admissions to change at Thomas Jefferson High, and others

I guess the offended Asian families can support Trump‘s DOJ, but at this rate under the Trump Administration they'll never see the inside of TJHSST again.

Big difference between that and spending thousands of dollars for prep classes, demanding they track into STEM activities, gatekeeping those activities through volunteerism....I could go on and on. And again, I don't have a huge problem with parents doing those things (save maybe the gatekeeping piece) - I have a problem with an admissions process that rewards that behavior.

What makes me uneasy about this line of logic is that if we extrapolate one level up, we can then say "we want to keep people who were in TJ out of top colleges, because they clearly had parents who demanded that they go all-in on the application process instead of being content with a base school in a highly-ranked school system; spent huge amounts of money on the technology access so that their kids could get ahead; used the school's imposing name to create exclusionary cliques, etc." As another poster pointed out, it's a sweeping generalization, and unfair to people who are genuinely dedicated students with supportive families.

The school system has decades of history of trying to undermine families who care about education in the name of making schools easy, and maybe I'm wrong, but this just sounds like the latest incarnation of the same.

I think that's a very reasonable and cogent argument in the other direction - thank you for that.

Right now, if you're a brilliant STEM-capable kid with many passions and interests and the first time you hear about TJ is at the 8th grade information session - or even the same session in 7th grade - you're going to be at an enormous disadvantage in the process. It's going to be really hard for you to work as quickly on the Quant-Q - where time is a major factor - as the kid who has been in prep classes. It's going to be really hard for you to give answers that the Admissions Committee likes on the SIS, because you haven't artificially squeezed yourself into Science Olympiad or Odyssey of the Mind for the last few years.

And I just don't think that's right. I think the process can be adjusted so that participation in those activities can be a plus, but so can participation in other activities. It can be adjusted so that it's not a huge advantage to have spent years spending money prepping for exams.

Again, THANK YOU for the reasoned argument. I think we probably agree on a lot.

Just to be clear (I'm the person you were replying to), I'm all for taking measures to make schools equitable towards minorities. I'm only worried when it seems like people are picking the wrong boogymen in the effort to resolve disparities.

I do agree that plenty of minorities have no problem performing at a high level when they don't have to listen to the BS about how standards needed to be dropped in order to squeeze them in. I think it's also important to be wary about logic which can be taken against families who are doing the right thing for their kids - it will invariably be used against families who are doing the right thing, and will eventually be used against the minorities that it's meant to help. You're absolutely right that's it's a tricky balancing act.

I don’t agree. Fcps has revised TJ admissions several times in the past to reduce Asian students and to increase black and Hispanic students. It looks like black and Hispanic students are not interested in applying.

That's....not a retort and only partially true. They are less interested in applying because of the toxic racism at the school. And again, not just by Asians.

I have yet to see solid evidence of toxic racism against black and Hispanics students at TJ by Asian students or otherwise. Just keep repeating it doesn’t make it so.

That's fine - you haven't heard the various accounts that have been delivered on plenty of Facebook pages, School Board meetings, whatever. Talk to any Black kid at TJ. What do you want, a video? Grow up.

Uh, yeah. Go look at the TJ Vents Facebook page and you will literally see TJ kids complaining about their classmates from underrepresented groups getting preferential treatment in TJ admissions, college admissions, internships, and a ton of other things. It's an anonymous forum, so they feel okay to post it. Kind of like a lot of people here.

I think URMs do receive preferential treatment in TJ admissions, college admissions and internships. That is true.

Even if it were true (which, with respect to TJ admissions it is not), that doesn’t make it any kind of okay to assume that that’s the only way that a kid could get in somewhere. Or to tell someone that. That’s a colossal jerk move.

Imagine being so racist that TJ can accept nearly no Black applicants out of 160 and you still think they get preferential treatment in admissions.

At the expense of Asian Americans I would add. That is the basis for the resentment.

"Federal officials are investigating allegations of discrimination against Asian American students in a suburban school system in Maryland where parents have complained that race was unlawfully used as a factor in magnet program admissions.

The Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights notified families it had taken up the case in March, months after a spate of complaints was filed against Montgomery County school officials."

https://www.baltimoresun.com/education/bs-md-montogomery-county-schools-racial-discrimination-20190422-story.html

"The Justice Department declared Thursday that a two-year investigation of Yale University’s admissions has found that the Ivy League school illegally discriminates against White and Asian American applicants in the highly competitive process of choosing an undergraduate class.

The department said it had concluded that the university gave too much weight to race in reviewing applications, in violation of federal civil rights law. “There is no such thing as a nice form of race discrimination,” Eric Dreiband, assistant attorney general for civil rights, said in a statement."

Do you know what “racism“ means? Do you just keep repeating that with the hope that, if you repeat it often enough, the thread will be locked.

And it may be, but that won’t stop the overdue reforms to which the state Department of Education, Scott Brabrand, and members of the General Assembly have now committed.

Yes I do. I have been a victim of racism as an Asian American and practiced law for 19 years.

Yet so little empathy for those who are less advantaged? So much for paying it forward.

I am empathetic but I also do not like discrimination based on race either.

So? That justifies telling someone that any success they have is entirely attributable to affirmative action?

Objection - relevance. There is no justification for telling someone that they only got something because of their race, even if that happens sometimes in some places.

Yeah, they’re not performing as well on an exam that really has very little to do with ability to thrive at TJ and favors expensive prep.

Everyone also needs to quit saying “standards have been lowered”. That’s false. Policies have been changed in the past, with goals in mind that the policies didn’t achieve,

Policies will change again this time. Indeed, some standards may be introduced or even RAISED in order to achieve the desired goal.

So OCR can conduct an investigation again, just like it did when the NAACP filed a complaint with DOE alleging that FCPS was discriminating against Black and Hispanic kids. Doesn’t mean that DOE will bring a lawsuit, much less that it would be successful, and DOE likely will be under new leadership soon. It’s basically equivalent to a statement thst “we’ll look into it.”

The irony, again, is that school systems can reduce the risk of such allegations by eliminating magnet schools and programs altogether. They aren’t required. So be careful what you complaIn about.
