It's all so stupid. As someone said above, thinking about it make me angry. And we also have family in many states and they are normal. It's so frustrating. But, what can we do? Can't move to another state randomly.

The stupid thing is these kids in the pool are already allowed to play together. So, they can hang out in neighborhood or even each other's houses but then come to the pool and stay 10' apart?

I say we go with the 50 person rule and it's at your own risk. If you don't want to go, then don't. Ask people to stay apart on deck and try to stay apart in the pool but that's it. He said 50 people and that's what should happen. We are going to church now inside with 200 people. I don't care that we have to wear masks....we are still doing it INSIDE. Or, a pool can mark off two lanes for people who want to stay apart and swim laps 3 to a lane or stand and cool off. The rest of the pool is open AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Pools are not limited to 50 people.

Max 3 swimmers per lane.....unless your pool is absolutely enormous.

So phase 2 allows crowds of 50 except at the pool there can’t be 50 total swimming and sitting?

In Phase 2 there can't be more than 3 people per lane during lap swim. Dive areas can be open with no more than 3 in the dive area (I don't know what defines a dive area) and exercise is allowed as long as participants are at least 10 feet from each other. There is no restriction to the number of people on deck if they are not a social gathering (ex. spectators at a sporting event, a concert, a party). Your table groupings do have to be at least 10 feet apart.

Go to the 23:45 mark.

I'm trying to wrap my head around how you can have hardly anyone swimming but tons of people sitting on the deck...I guess this is for resort/hotel pools?

Exactly. As stated before these guidelines must have been written for indoor rec centers. I can see this being an issue at a Fairfax rec center that has hundreds of people cycling through everyday but not at our small neighborhood pool.

Now do Great Wolf Lodge.

Their website clearly says temporarily closed through June 15

I just called Great Wolf Lodge.

Park will be open on June 15th, hotel will start accepting guests on June 16th.

If that’s true then that’s mind blowing.

No kidding. I’m scared to go to that place during normal life and pick up germs.

that makes no sense. They entered Phase 2 June 5th. There is no scenario that we will be to Phase 3 by June 15. How on earth could GWL open under the Phase 2 restrictions? I would love to believe they know something we don't know and an amendment to Phase 2 is coming- but crazy lady who writes VA Covid pool rules, but doesn't swim, insisted in the webinar Friday that there would be no Phase 2.5. And in what conceivable world is an indoor water park, that attracts people from all over safe, and an outdoor community pool must be restricted to lap swimming and organized exercise classes?

Huh? Seriously? Here we are stressing (I am literally getting headaches and upset stomachs) as a volunteer trying to plan with our board a way to operate with less than 200 family memberships in Phase 2. Please tell me something that will help this make sense.

Seriously?

Stop stressing and allow 50 people to sign up per 45 minute block and don’t worry about what they do in the pool. A family can sign up once a day.

I know easier said than done.

Some people above had good ideas.

Maybe these ideas need to be put in place for first week and see if the VDH or pool management goes after anyone and then relax things a bit more.

This is what happens when you put a person from the Department of Health who said "I don't go to pools and I don't swim" who's prior job just a few weeks ago was "Head of Bedding & Upholstered Furniture" in charge of Pool reopening for the entire state.

So please, don't think what she is putting out has any basis in science or Public Health.

It's CYA

A webinar is not law. This VDH employee's title before the pandamic was "Head of Bedding & Upholstered Furniture" and not people are acting like she is the word of god.

The order is very clear - https://www.governor.virginia.gov/media/governorvirginiagov/governor-of-virginia/pdf/Virginia-Forward-Phase-Two-Guidelines.pdf (pool info is on page 23)

"Indoor and outdoor swimming pools may be open for lap swimming, diving, exercise, and instruction only", there is no further definition of "exercise" provided in the order.

ex·er·cise/ˈeksərˌsīz/ - "activity requiring physical effort, carried out to sustain or improve health and fitness."

Throwing a football in the shallow = exercise
5 year old dogie paddling = exercise
Cannon balls off the side = exercise

No, those aren’t exercise bc they aren’t carried out To sustain or improve health. Is a 5 year old dog paddling to improve health? No. He may take gym to improve health tho.

^^ you only make that work if you ignore the second part of the definition.

Aquatic aerobics is exercise

Splashing in a pool isn’t.

If the definition is essentially moving at all, you’re including everything but pretty much being comatose.

Walking is exercise, right? Walking in a pool is exercise. I think kids splashing around in a pool are exercising--they are developing and maintaining their physical fitness.

No (except the walking)

I just called Great Wolf Lodge. Yes, I'm bored. They say they are opening in W-burg on June 16th and are planning all amenities including waterpark and pool amenities to be available. They said they would not open a hotel for booking if the waterpark was closed.
So the owners of GWL were told W-burg would be in Phase 3 by June 16, and Phase 3 is everything is open??? That's the only thing that makes sense.

"activity requiring physical effort, carried out to sustain or improve health and fitness."

Kid 1 - 1-2 hours at a pool every day during the summer. Splashing, jumping, paddling.

Kid 2 - 1-2 hours playing video games or watching TV in his basement

Which one is doing "activity requiring physical effort"?

Which one is "sustaining or improving health and fitness."?

That’s possible I guess. That’s still a big jump from 2 to 3.
