Previous episodes have shown Rebecca trying to control Kate's diet, which was both awful and realistic. I loved seeing Kate stand up for herself and her determination to break the food-policing cycle, and it made me cringe to see Toby acknowledge genetics and to say "People are horrible to fat kids, and the solution is not to get fat, despite genetics." Yeah, Toby, and the solution to depression is to buck up and look on the bright side.

Or, you know, you could be supportive of people and treat everyone as having value.

Really disliking Toby, maybe for the first time.

Toby made serious lifestyle changes, focused on healthy diet and exercise, to lose a significant amount of weight. I think it's reasonable for him to suggest attention to diet and exercise would be beneficial for the kids, as someone who's been on both sides. Kate may have been dealt a worse genetic hand, but she doesn't seem particularly attentive to diet and exercise concerns.

I've never liked Toby-- too much over-the-top, super hero Jack energy for my liking. That was probably what drew Kate to him. I love Kate's character development and was thrilled Rebecca picked her as the understudy to Miguel's role as captain. Their tightening relationship the last two seasons has been great.

The distance relationship while parenting dynamic hits close to home. The show nailed it so well. The sensitivity/guilt of the absent parent combined with disruption or questioning of parenting routines is really, really tough.

The best part of the episode was the Miguel/Rebecca backstory. I think we could all surmise that Miguel had fallen in love with Rebecca and chose to distance himself as a result. The fact that Rebecca was so devastated by that was a wonderful surprise.

And finally, what the heck is a sugar pie??? A flan, a tarte, a cheesecake, what? And what is the secret ingredient? FTR, my guess is almond extract.

What drives me crazy is that it's all self inflicted! Could Toby really not find a fulfilling job in LA? We know they can live off one income, so it's not like they NEED to live with this arrangement.

He had been out of work for quite a while and seemed to be feeling pretty desperate-- both professionally and because he was losing his mind as a SAHP. That storyline was written still in the depth of the pandemic, wasn't it, before we started to really see the economy pick up? So the calculation of what opportunities might still emerge closer to home was different than it would be today. I also think that he is loving the job, his ego is getting a big boost, so he seems less desperate to move back, which is playing into his sensitivity about being away. His guilt is making him target Kate.

Good point. It just seems weird that of all the fields where one could find work, and likely work that one can do remotely, tech didn't come through for him. Come ON.

That said, they've done a good job of writing so that I sort of want him out of the picture, except that I feel bad for his fictional children.

Boring episode to me

Toby isn't bothering me with this storyline. Kate is the one who is bothering me. Yes, it sucks to have a husband travel for work but then she should encourage him to look for jobs closer or consider moving closer to his job.

spouses shouldn't call each other out at the thanksgiving table. You discuss what to feed your children in private. And what she put on his plate, on THANKSGIVING DAY, was completely appropriate.

Secret ingredient is love

Still no closer to the "How I met your Mother"

Agreed, though I don't disagree with his larger point. A more honest portrayal of their relationship might show some frustration on his part that he worked hard and succeeded in getting healthier and she hasn't.

^^and the implications for their kids.

Clearly divorce is coming sooner rather than later but then why do we think the family wants Toby at Rebecca's death bed? Doesn't make a lot of sense. Especially when presumably Kate and Jack and/or second husband are the ones on their way.

Perhaps the best episode in a long time.

I actually thought Kate was over the top criticizing Toby for working away from home when she’s he one that told him to take the job.

Jennifer Morrison was shown in preview of next week’s episode. Definitely keeping us guessing. I think Kevin gets back with Morrison’s character because she sees his BS and he knows he has to be real with her.

Randall would be devastated if he heard mom tell Kate she was her best friend. He thinks he has the best connection with her. I believe Kate being surrogate will be a problem since earlier Randall mentioned how he missed his mom and feels he’s the only one who knows how to take care of her.

In the future sequence Toby asked something about “are you sure she’s ok with me being there?” I assume he is referencing Kate. Assuming Rebecca’s death is 5-10 years in the future and Kate has remarried then their relationship must not have improved after the divorce. I think Miguel has passed especially when they were in the car (a few episodes back) and he said to Rebecca not to worry he would take care of her until the end.

If Rebecca has Alzheimer's she may not remember that Toby and Kate have divorced. I've seen it happen. People with dementia often remember things further back in time better than more recent events.

More importantly, if he's stayed in the picture for his kids, they may need his support when their grandma dies, especially if Kate is the one making all the arrangements.

I know they can't do it with Chrissy Metz, but I would love to see Kate lose the weight in 10 years

Cassidy really had no story line unless she ends up being the wife

Plus the whole "Kate as backup" would be a weird addition to the scene if it weren't pegged to a future development.

Yes but Rebecca is not conscious, she is on her death bed. I know HW likes every one to think there’s consciousness and something wonderful is said but not in my experience.
