Not a Loudoun parent, but I think you are discounting them too much. To me, they have always seemed to have the best youth program in VA up through the U12s. Once those teams reached the U13 age group, they were historically picked clean by the ECNL and DA options in the area. However, now that they have ECNL, I would be very surprised if they do not become the top ECNL/DA program in NoVa as the 07, 08, 09, etc. age groups continue to age up and go through ECNL.

Granted, time will tell, and I could definitely be wrong on this. But if I had to make a bet on whether Loudoun will be top dog in NoVa in 5 years among all the ECNL/DA teams, then I'd bet on Loudoun.

The only real problem with Loudoun is their style of play is more conducive to success at younger ages than it is able to maintain success in higher levels of play at the older ages like ECNL. If Loudoun can be more patient with a club wide consistent possession style then I agree with you. They always have a large and talented pool of players but they tend to take the easy wins at younger ages through brute force.

That is a problem as is their choice for some of the coaches for their ECNL teams. They have several highly qualified and well respected coaches on staff that don’t get the coaching jobs for top teams. Instead those positions are handed to coaches with seniority over qualifications.

Loudoun had success through numbers. Kids are taught team soccer very early on. They always beat teams that were more free flowing in their play.

At U15, Loudoun kids left for FCV and McLean. Loudoun kids will continue going to FCV for DA. However, they wont go to McLean anymore.

McLean will suffer because of this as they lose their Loudoun pipeline as well as Mclean kids going to Arlington for DA. That's why a Mclean-Spirit partnership makes sense.

It removes a ECNL program from the area and strengthens a DA program.

It only makes sense if you think the powers that be in McLean could actually "partner" with anyone. To do that means giving up control. Not happening.

Here we go again. WS VA has an 07 who has played in U14 and U15 games this past season. While it may not be the best for their w/l ratio, it may be the correct decision for her development. How did Arlington girls DA do in U16 and above? NO WINS BECAUSE THEY DID NOT COMPETE. Spirit VA has a bunch of really talented players from 08 thru 01 in their VA DA.

Spirit could do a better job recruiting for their VA program. Hopefully they will after they announce that they will be maintaining the VA program in a few weeks.

The results show that at these age groups FCV and WS-MD are very competitive, Arlington is holding it's own, and WS-VA is not very competitive. It would not be accurate to say that Arlington is just behind FCV. Given their location, size of their player pool, and access to fields, they have the potential to catch up at some point, but right now I would say that Arlington is still far behind FCV, but that WS-VA is far behind Arlington.

The lingering uncertainty over whether or not they are even going to have a program at all next year is not going to help them bridge that gap.

The lingering uncertainty will soon be eliminated. If the new management at Spirit maintains their DA, it will remain a strong pathway to playing soccer at the collegiate level.
